Many think that volunteering to enrich your CV is a career move that only recent graduates make. But this isn't the case. Organizations like United Nations Volunteers are actively seeking mid-level career professionals. Think you have what it takes to be a UN volunteer? Check out these stats on UN volunteers from 2012.

  • It is clear that UNV seeks and appeals to a different segment of the global volunteer resource pool than the volunteer- or voluntourism providers. The former are focused on acquiring mid-level career professionals and generally attract more and elder men than women; the average voluntourist is 20-25 years old, yet to graduate and female. Another difference is that UNV seeks and attracts mainly local volunteers, who work in and from their own country (81%), whereas voluntourism facilitators get and process most if not all of their applications from Western countries (Europe and US). Last-but-not-least and not mentioned in the infographic: UNV has a substantial number of online or virtual volunteers it mobilizes towards assisting development organizations in the countries it works in. Perhaps Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), headquartered in the UK, comes closest to the UNV. In other words: UNV has created it's own unique space in the global volunteering space and as such plays the part of role model for other players.
