2. Definition:
The conditional tense says that an action
is reliant on something else. The
conditionals are used to talk about real or
unreal situations, they are sometimes
called if-clauses. Real Conditional
describes real-life situations. Unreal
Conditional describes unreal, imaginary
situations.
3. ZERO CONDITIONAL
• FORM:
IF + PRESENT SIMPLE, subject+ PRESENT SIMPLE
• USE:
FOR FACTS THAT ARE GENERALLY TRUE.
• EXAMPLE:
If you heat water to 100 degrees celsius , it boils.
4. FIRST CONDITIONAL:
• FORM:
IF + PRESENT, subject + Will + infinitive
• USE:
To talk about situations that are possible or likely to happen.
• Example:
If she finishes her homework, she will go to the cinema.
5. SECOND CONDITIONAL
• FORM:
IF + PAST SIMPLE, + WOULD + INFINITIVE
• USE:
To talk about situations which are imaginary or unlikely to
happen.
• EXAMPLE:
If I met Brad Pitt, I would ask him for his autograph.
6. THIRD CONDITIONAL
• FORM:
IF + HAD+ PAST PARTICIPLE, WOULD HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE
• USE:
To talk about imaginary or hypothetical situations in the past.
• EXAMPLE:
If she had got up earlier, she wouldn‟t have missed the train.
7. Conditionals without “if”
