When we were working, with students, on computer for giving information of Design For Change Campaign a girl, named Tannu said, “We are learning computer but my Mother did not know about even alphabets because she is illiterate” . Tannu describes an incidence few days before when my mother came back from her uncle’s village to her home, she faced a problem to find out her bus because she could not read the sign board on bus. My Mother asked to many passengers but every one was in hurry. One more incident was shared by students. They said that when their mothers come to the school for parents-teachers meeting, they use thumb despite sign. We felt very dishonorable because even in 21 st century our mothers are illiterate. Tannu’s and other students innocent replies really struck the core of our heart. Then students have decided to work on this burning issue with.

Students specially visit SC and OBC houses , because our objective is to teach underprivileged illiterate women. During the survey work our student used stamp pad and paper slips for identification. Students were putting their thumb or sign on slips and dropped them in drop boxes. They have done a survey of 70 houses in four days. When the student were consolidating their data, it was found that out of 70 women 59 were illiterate. This result required some action to reduce the illiteracy from rural community.

Choupal means a common place for meetings in villages. All the issues are discussed and solved in Choupal. when our students invite to mothers for meeting then they denied the proposal and they says, “we are not allowed in Choupal, only men can be entered in it”. To resolve the venue problem Rekha Devi agreed to provide her House for literacy classes. After that we take time for classes because they all are house wife's and they don’t have enough time for literacy classes. Finally they have decided their rest time from 1.00 pm to 2.00 pm to use for learn their names.

After that students write their mothers name on slats and mothers doing overwriting for strokes recognition. Their confidence was built up day by day. They were told their experience and achievement to other women those were not came due to hesitation then our strength increased day by day.
