The photographer plans to take photos of a musician in a studio with a black backdrop and props like a guitar. They want lighting that shows the set and the artist performing. The clothes will be casual like jeans and a bright top to suit the musician performing. Small multi-colored lights and an old suitcase prop will add atmosphere. Drawing from Ami Barwell's dark clothing on a light backdrop technique, the photographer will use a dark backdrop with lighter clothing and capture details with different angles and close-ups. Soft lighting will help the multi-colored lights stand out and low dramatic lighting will ensure the artist is visible. Health and safety precautions like taping down light wires and keeping the space tidy will be followed.
Capturing a Musician's Performance with Props and Studio Lighting
1. Photography & Photographic Practice
Photography Shoot 1
Photographs to be taken – The photos I want to take are done in the
photography studio with a simple black background. Using props such as a
guitar will help create the scene of a musician. In the frame I want the back
drop and the lights so that you can see the set. I also want the artist to be
performing. This will go well with the magazine cover and will interest my
target audience.

Equipment & Props needed – The clothes can be very casual. Jeans and a
bright top will balance casual and the look of the artist performing. Small,
multi-coloured lights will help add the atmosphere of a gig. The artist using a
guitar will show what the artist can do and help attract an audience. An old
suitcase will add a vintage look to the pictures. This is for the target
audience.
Techniques that will be used –
Ami Barwell has a good style of capturing the light and dark photographs.
Even though she uses black and white and I want to use colour, the dark
clothing on a white back drop works really well. I would want to do it the
opposite way. I would want to have a dark back drop with lighter clothing.
The different angles and the close ups are really good for capturing detail.
2. By Ami Barwell. This simple photograph is perfect for
either inside the magazine or on the front cover. The use of the prop is a
good what to show what the artist plays without it showing them playing it.
How light quality can be used to help convey the visual message – The use
of soft lighting will help make the multi-colours lights stand out a lot better.
Having the low light lower down will add a dramatic look and will ensure
that the artist can still be seen.
Health and safety considerations – In the photo studio, being cautious of
wires from the lights is very important. Taping them down would help them
stay in place. With it being a small compact space, ensuring the room is tidy
will help keep everything organised and out of the way.
