Chapter 1.2: Childhood Tales

Welcome back to the story of my first Apocalypse attempt!
Last time we left, Marie had told us about the dream she had and in which she learned important things about her parents‘ former life. It ended with her birthday.
And here she is now – grown into a cute young girl… with a certain interest in her hand.

This chapter will be told with the help of her brother, Magellan.
See, while Marie had this strange dream of past events she never could have witnessed, Magellan gives me his own mystery.
So far he seems to be the only one of his family who can hear – me. Oh, I could talk to Kaylar while she was still in college but after she got here, she would not hear me anymore.
Something very strange is going on with this family. Something which even I can‘t fully understand now. We‘ll just have to see where time leads us…

Hey! Magellan!
„ Waaah, what‘s that voice?“ *drops book*
I am your creator, Magellan.
„ I‘m old enough to know how my parents…“
Shush, I don‘t mean that. I‘m the creator of all Sims in this game!
„ Are you really? Why have you never talked to us before?“
Well, I tried… but for some reason no one in your family can hear me. Well, no one except you. But that‘s ok. At least you can.
„ Marie or my parents won‘t believe this, will they?“
Probably not.

„ Oh, why does it have to be me?“
You make this sound like a punishment!
„ Well, I‘d rather be normal, to be honest.“
Kid, look around you. Your life isn‘t normal. Not at all. But don‘t worry. We‘ll eventually find out what‘s going on here.

„ What do you mean? What is going on?“
Well, I mean, what has happened to this place so that now litterally everything is in ruins.
„ Er… Creator?“
Yes?
„ What was it like… before this? What was so different?“
Did your parents never tell you about this?
„ No…“
Oh dear. Well, I suppose it‘s not so bad for you, you don‘t miss the things you never knew. But for example, did you know that before this – whatever – happend, Sims could have showers?

„ Showers? What‘s that?“
Well, let‘s just say, you‘d be able to wash yourself properly then.
„ No way!“
Yep.
„ So much water… wouldn‘t my skin get thin then?“
Hehe, no.

„ And what else?“
Oh, let‘s see… having food as often as you want, for example.
„ Wow, that would be cool. I‘d eat gelatine three times a day!“
Not only gelatin. There are loads of other things that could be eaten.
But what I really miss is summer.
„ What‘s… summer?“
Well, you know, a time of year with no snow, only sunny, warm days and maybe a bit of rain….
Oh, er, rain falls from the sky, just like snow, but it‘s simply water.
*snort*
„ Haha! As if I‘d believe something like that! Water falling from the sky, sure. Do you think I‘m dumb?“
I‘m not making this up, Magellan!

„ Yeah, sure. Can I go back to reading now? Before someone comes in and hears me talking to myself…“
Sure. But don‘t forget, keep the readers updated on your family and your lives, alright? They might be able to help us solve this mystery.
And keep me updated, too… I have a feeling I missed something…

„ Well, you did.“
What is it?
„ Mum is pregnant again.“
What??
„ Yeah, isn‘t that great?“
Hm, not sure. There is hardly enough food in your house and too many snow days.
„ Tell me about it. I have been a child for two days and haven‘t even been to school yet! I‘m going to start after this weekend, the same day as my younger sister! That‘s embarassing.“

Oh, it won‘t be that bad, I‘m sure.
„ We‘ll see. But now I‘ll go back to reading my story again.“
You do that.
„ And, er… Creator?“
Yes?
„ Don‘t talk to me when there are other people around, ok? I don‘t want them to think I‘m hearing voices.“
You are hearing voices. Well, my voice.
*glares*
Ok, ok, I‘ll promise, I‘ll only talk to you in real emergencies. That fine?
„ Thank you.“
Little smart a…
„ Excuse me?“
Um, nothing.

„ Ok, let‘s see about this narrating…
Well, since I could not go to school for now (snow days and weekend), I spent some time teaching my sister Marie a bit about playing chess.
It‘s real fun once you get the hang of it… though Marie was not so sure about this at first. She learned to like the game later, though. Pity, because it was great fun beating her at it!“

„ After the weekend the schoolbus was finally able to get to our house and Marie and I had our first day of school together.
It was not as embarrassing as I feard, we would have been in the same class, anyway – there are not much children around here.“

„ And while we were gone, something exciting happened at home…“
Yeah, exciting, for you. For me, rather a disaster.
„ This isn‘t an emergency, is it?“
*sigh* Fine. Go on. Sorry.
„ As I said, something exciting happened at home…“

„ Mum had twins! A girl and a boy. Aren‘t they cute?“
Well, if you ask me…
*cough*
Twins qualify as an emergency for me!
„ Ok… why did you name them Möbius and Mendela?“
Well, Mendela after Gregor Johann Mendel, an Austrian scientist (and priest). He is often called the "father of modern genetics" for his study of the inheritance of traits in pea plants.
And Möbius after August Ferdinand Möbius who was a German mathematician and theoretical astronomer who is best known for his discovery of the Möbius strip.
„ If you say so.“

„ Well, when we came back home from school, Marie was in a very bad mood. I was rather worried about my homework, but she did not care so much, only glanced at it once and then left it on the floor.“

„ And she went straight to bed. She said she felt tired and stinky and homework was the last thing she wanted to do now.“

„ I was stinky, too… we always are. I guess those shower would be a great thing…
Well, whatever. I did not mind so much, after staying at home for four days I was quite happy to have something to do. And Mum helped me with my homework.“

„ I didn‘t tell any of my parents, but when they were looking after the twins later that evening, I did Marie‘s homework, too. I didn‘t want her to get in trouble with the teacher and she is younger than me, after all.“

„ The next evening, Marie was more interested in homework, though. She said going to bed too early made her have funny dreams. Whatever that means.
I supect she just wanted Mum to be focused on her for a while.

„ Oh, yes. That‘s something that happens in our house frequently. Broken sinks. Mum hates to repair them.“

„ Dad is rather stoic about it. What has to be done has to be done, he says.
He does not like me watching him while repairing, though, so I read in a book how stuff like this is done. When I‘m older, I can do it for Mum and she won‘t have to worry about it anymore.“

„ I won‘t let Ryker clean our sinks, though – he always breaks them!“

„ Mom does not like bad smell at all…. Sometimes she tries to hide it and sometimes…“

„… she doesn‘t bother to.
Well, I know our parents are mostly looking after the twins and working right know but I really don‘t understand why Marie is so happy about this kind of attention…“

„ Washing hands doesn‘t help much.
I really wonder what‘s it like to have a shower… or a bath. I can‘t imagine that properly… but I know once I‘m a bit taller I‘ll have a sponge bath like Dad!“

„ Again, Marie is worse off than me. I don‘t really know why, we‘re both equally sloppy, but washing hands helps her even less than me.
She needs the Jumbok Mum found in some cave next to her to make any difference!“

„ I was so happy when it was the twins‘ birthday! I couldn‘t do much to help with them as babies but now I could at least play with them!“

„ Oh, and doing our homework paid off – soon we both had an A+! I think Dad was proud of us, altough he didn‘t show it much. I know he values Knowledge a lot.
I don‘t think Marie was as happy as I was about this, but oh well.“

„ She‘d rather play with her friends from school. I wouldn‘t be surprised if she turns out just like Mum – wanting to have 20 best friends.“

„ Creator?“
Yes?
„ Do you think I‘ll be going to space one day just like Mum does?“
Well, maybe. Do you want to be a space pirate, too?
„ No, not a pirate. I‘m not so keen on treasures and all. They are a bit useless, aren‘t they?“
Around here? I guess so.
Except for the Jumbok. I love that statue! No, I think being an astronaut would be cool. I guess.“
I‘ll see what I can do.

„ Then my birthday came. It wasn‘t really spectacular – growing up in front of your Mum right next to the car can hardly be - but I was excited nonetheless. This was the day my goal in life would be set – who wouldn‘t be excited?“

„ And I suddenly felt so tall!“

„ Hm, now I can understand why Marie likes making so many friends… and why Mum always says things are easier to bear with friends around… I want to have a lot of best friends, too!“

„ Yep.“

Nice clothes. You do know you can‘t be best friends with a statue, right?

*whispers* „No, but with my little sister. But before that, she needs to learn how to talk.“
Very… selfless?
*creator awwwws because of the cuteness of this picture*

„ My two youngest siblings were now too big to being washed in the sink and weren‘t really happy about that…
Creator, was it that bad for Marie and me, too?“
Yes, pretty much. I can‘t wait until someone of your family becomes a doctor. Will you?
„ I‘d rather be a General, you know.“
General is fine, too. But you‘ll probably have to take which job comes up first.
„ That stupid computer game blocking the phone lines and internet except on tuesdays, yes, I know.“

„ At least the twins were still young enough not to be bothered with Mum‘s reaction to their stinkyness…
I love my Mum but this can get really annoying!“

Ah, looking for a potential future wife?
*whisper through teeth*
„ I just want to be friends with her… and she likes me.“

But she obviously doesn‘t, hehe.
„ I was just suggesting building the snowman with the face towards the street… kids.“
You still want to be friends with her?
„ Of course.“
Ok. oO

Magellan… why is your mother growing up outside?
„ I have no idea… but you know what‘s worse?“
What?

„ She said she wants to be buried in her training clothes.“
Oh, great. Fashion disaster. What did I download all those nice elder clothes for? Grmpf.
„ We‘ll try to unlock Show Business as soon as possible for you, creator.“
*sniff* That‘s very thoughtful, Magellan, thank you.

„ With Mum now being an elder and Dad having his birthday nearing as well, I knew I had to be to one to take over responsibility. Marie and the twins were still so young, they needed someone to look after them.“
Does this mean you… volunteer to be heir?
„ Yes.“
*is speechless*

„ I worked hard the following weeks. I maxed most of my skills, even body. Well, it helped that I had nine active points, thanks to my father.“
Don‘t remind me… *grml*
„ Well, you never know what‘s out there… this might come in handy, when I have to leave the lot for my job later.“
I know. I just wished you weren‘t so hungry all the time!
„ Me, too! But I‘ll have some delicious gelatin right after this exercise!“

As I see, your Mum hasn‘t changed a bit in her old age…
„ What happened to the whole „I‘ll only talk to you in emergencies“ thing?“
Oh, shut up.
„ There‘s something more important going on right now than my mother‘s obsession with stink, anyway.“
And what would that be?

„ Hey, little bro. It‘s time to grow up now… and going to school tomorrow. Let‘s hope it‘s not a snow day because with six people in the house gelatin isn‘t really as filling as it used to be.“

„ Despite the lack of hygiene, the twins grew up happy and healthy, as you can see.“

„ And they went straight to bed a floor below… maybe the Jumbok would help them get a bit less smelly. Eugh.“
Don‘t start acting like your mother!
„ Sorry. I won‘t.“

„ More importantly though, the twins‘ birthday was not the only one that day… my sister Marie grew up to become a teenager! I bet she‘ll take after Mum as well!“

„ Um, seems I was wrong. She headed straight for the bookshelf… striving for knowledge, just like Dad.“
Magellan, do you see it? Do you?
„ What?“
Your sister got your mother‘s pointy ears! You can see them poking out through the hair! Oh, that‘s so cute, I love those ears!

„ Well, I might not have the pointy ears, but I certainly have the better outfit… Marie, don‘t you think you‘ll be cold in those shorts?“
„ Oh, I‘ll wear a Parka outside.“
What a logic.

„ With now six people to live of gelatin, Mum and Dad resorted to meditating a lot.
Which meant, Marie and I had to look after our siblings most of the time. It wasn‘t so bad, though… actually quite the only diversion during our days… there is no High School, so we didn‘t get out of the house much and not away from the lot at all.“

„ Mendela and Möbius both were A+ students after a while!“
Well, I guess it helped that you did their homework from time to time if they didn‘t feel like it. ;)
„ I was… bored.“
Bored enough to do elementary school homework?
„ Well, you go and meditate around the Jumbok for hours!“
I, er, see your point.
Author‘s note: Have I mentioned I love Magellan? He was a lifesaver while raising the twins! He and his sister are officially my most beloved Sims ever!

Oh, no! Magellan, what happened to you?
„ I got pimples. You didn‘t really think I‘d get through teenagehood without showers and not get pimples, did you?“
I don‘t mean the pimples, I mean your skin is gray! I told you to get inside hours ago!
„ Well, Brandi and I were talking…“
I knew Brandi has been nicknamed „Ice Queen“ by some people but I never thought it was meant so litterally…

„ Mum recently got obsessed with writing a novel about our lifes here.“
Does it say anything about what happened here? Or about her college time? Or me?
„ Nope, nothing. It‘s as if her life started here with getting a job. She hasn‘t mentioned you or life before living here. And no clue to what caused all this as far as I can tell.“
Very odd.

„ Look, Dad maxed his body skill, too. Now he can keep going to work as an elder.“
Well, he better does. His lifetime want is to become a Hall of Famer and this job just showed up a few days ago, so it‘s still quite a time to go.
„ Ah, he can do it, I‘m sure.“

„ As I said, a lot of our time was spent meditating. With or without the Jumbok because…“

„… sometimes the twins needed it more. They had to spend a lot of time on their own… I feel sorry about them.“

I wouldn‘t, Magellan. Look, they found quite a few ways to entertain themselves. Want to join them smustling?
„ Er… not now, no.“
Are you… shy?
„ I have 9 points in outgoing, I‘m not shy!“
Oh, points, they don‘t say all there is to say… you‘re shy!
*glares*
Hehe… er, sorry. *still grinning*

Marie doesn‘t seem so shy, though… she‘s found herself a boyfriend. And she has only 3 outgoing points!
„ Well… I‘m more interested in friends than love, anyway.“
Don‘t worry, Magellan, your time will come, too. You‘ll have to have kids, remember?
„ I know… well, I can be best friends with them.“
Popularity Sims. Shesh.

„ Look, creator, the twins are growing up!“
Oh, Mendela picked a nice outfit. But not really warm, either.
„ Girls!“
I prefer warm clothes in winter, thank you.
„ You‘re not a girl.“
Oh?
„ Aw, you know what I mean.“
Hmpf.

„ Better pay attention to Möbius, it‘s his birthday, too!“
Ok, ok.
„ They both turned out like Marie and Dad, by the way. Knowledge.“
Three Knowledge Sims? Talk about family traits.

„ I would discuss this with you… but who is that woman? And why is Mum asking her to move in?“
Well, it‘s Tuesday.
„ So?“
And you‘ll be growing up in two days.
„ Sooo?“
So… this is your future wife.
„ My… wife?“
Yep. Your mother met her in college… seems she hasn‘t forgotten her. So something else must keep her from talking about it…

„ Never mind that right now… I have to marry her? I don‘t even know her name!“
Meadow. Meadow Thayer. And you‘ll like her, you‘ll see.
„ Ok… I better go and talk to her.“
Wait, let her find a job first. It‘s Tuesday, after all.

*whispers*
„ Aren‘t you going to leave? This is private!“
Oh, come on. I know you since you were a baby, after all!
„ Get out!“
„ Do you mean me?“
„ No, not you, Meadow…“
Great, now she thinks I‘m nuts before I even got to say hello.
Ok, ok, I‘m leaving. Have fun, you too.
*glares*
Alright, alright, I‘m as good as gone.

Woopsie, sorry, Magellan, I missed your father‘s birthday. He grew up in the bathroom, of course. Still good looking, though.
„ Better make sure you don‘t miss my birthday as well!“
No way!

„ Woah, this tickles…“

Ha. Yes, Cliffhanger.
Will Meadow and Magellan have any bolts for each other at all?
Will they have children to keep the family line going?
Are any of the other Sims going to be able to talk to me again?
And: how did Magellan get Marie to tell us her dream in the first place?
Concerning Meadow: I generated new Townies and NPCs when setting up this neighbourhood and got rid of the old teens by sending them to college. I deleted most of them from the Sim Bin there, but I made Meadow into a townie and Kaylar ended up in a dorm with her, so I took the opportunity to unlock a college job.
Concerning the toddler blankets: Due to me playing way ahead of my actual story, I had the toddler blankets for my whole generation two until I realized that was actually cheating… I placed a crib / objects in front of them for gen three thinking this would help (figured loosing the space would make up for using them in the first place ;)), but the toddler was too clever and crawled around the objects, so I got rid of them entirely.
