  • We often think that change in education is slow. But is this true? Perhaps we not watching carefully? This is Walter Lewin: a. grandfather an illiterate immigrant; b. himself PHD in Physics at TUD; c. professor of Physics at MIT. Walter is 75. Last week, after 45 years Walter visited Delft Univ. 2M of Holland’s 16M inhabitants watched him on TV. 300 students attended his guest lecture. More were not allowed in. Thousands watched his rainbow lecture on line. Walter is brilliant and OCW made him an educational superstar.
  • Substitute the name of your Institution where the slide says “Your Institution’s”
  • The idea for OpenCourseWare came out of the Massachusetts institute for Technology (MIT), where a faculty committee that was charged in the year 200 by then-president Charles Vest with answering two questions:
  • Aanleiding seminar Board meeting this week in Delft Strong growth interntional More and more initiatives in NL but in different stages. Need to adress an number of strategic issues
  • Insert the name of your institution, its mission and its mission-oriented activities. Most mission-oriented activities will benefit from greater exposure and wider dissemination of ideas. Expect to use several slides here in explaining the connections. Mission examples: MIT: Best serve nation and world JHSPH: Improve global public health Utah State: Land grant institution Notre Dame: Catholic social mission United Nations University: contribute, through research and capacity building, to efforts to resolve the pressing global problems that are a concern of the United Nations, its Peoples and Member States. Samples: JHSPH: Improve global public health OCW will help us improve public health by taking up-to-date public health education to the people who need it most: * doctors working in the field * public health officials * community organizers Utah State is a ‘land grant’ university. “ The mission of these institutions is to teach agriculture, military tactics, and the mechanic arts, not to the exclusion of classical studies, so that members of the working classes might obtain a practical college education” OCW will help us extend life-long learning opportunities to those who could not otherwise afford them, and will help us attract a wider range of students to the benefits of formal, post-secondary education. If your university has a thematic mission, you might consider starting with courses that emphasize that theme.
  • Finally, OCW is, like most education, what we choose to make of it at each institution.
  • Among freshmen who knew of OCW before choosing MIT: - 35% say OCW influenced their choice significantly Used by: - 90% of students - 84% of faculty - 50% of alumni and staff
  • Finally, OCW is, like most education, what we choose to make of it at each institution.
  • Add in your own contact information, and keep this slide up while you take questions and comments from the audience.
