  • 10. GREENHOUSE EFFECT
The greenhouse effect occurs when certain gases in the atmosphere trap infrared radiation. This effect makes the planet warmer. When their is more greenhouse gases in the air, the air holds more heat. This is why more greenhouse gases cause global warming.
  • 11.
  • 12.
  • 13. GREENHOUSE GASES
The greenhouse effect is caused due greenhouse gases such as :
    • Carbon dioxide (co2)
    • 14. Methane
    • 15. CFCs
    • 16. Nitrous oxide
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2):
    • Fossil fuels burning, especially coal (70-75%)
    • 17. Deforestation and plant burning (20-25%).
Average time in the troposphere is 50-500 years.
  • 18. LAYERS OF ATMOSPHERE
  • 19. Methane (CH4):
    • Rice paddies, guts of cattle and termites , coal production and natural gas leaks from oil and gas production andpipelines.
    • 20. Average time of methane in troposphere is 9-15 years.
  • Chlorofluorocarbons :
    Air-conditioners, refrigerators, plastic foams.
Average time in troposphere is 11-20
    years.
  • 21. Nitrous oxide (N2O) :
    • Fossil fuel burning, fertilises, live-
    stock wastes, and nylon production.
    • Average time of N2O in troposphere is 120 years.

  • 29. Kyoto protocol
    • Kyoto protocol was negotiated by many countries in December 1997 and came into force with Russia's ratification on February 16, 2005.
    • 30. The protocol was developed under the UNFCCC – the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change .
    • 31. The participant countries should cut down the emission of greenhouse gases like : carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydro fluorocarbons, per fluorocarbons, sulphur hexafluoride.
  • Kyoto – success or failure ?
  • 32. FACTS ON GLOBAL WARMING
  • 33. What will happen if global warming is allowed to continue ?
  • 34. If worlds warms by :
10c : climate will become intolerable
  • 35. 20c : Ocean life in danger
  • 36. 30c : heat waves fatalities
  • 37. 40c : great cities wash away
  • 38. 50c : civilization collapses
  • 39. 60C : Mass extinction occurs
