  • 1. ACQUIRED STRUCTURE PREPARATION
  • 2. TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE The student, working as a member of a team, shall conduct a pre-fire survey of a structure and prepare it for use in live fire training evolutions, so that the structure is rendered safe for use.
  • 3. ENABLING OBJECTIVES
    • Identify and describe all permits required for use in training in an acquired structure.
    • Describe and demonstrate pre-burn planning procedures for an acquired structure.
    • Describe and demonstrate proper procedures for making an acquired structure and the surrounding area safe for training.
  • 4. PERMITS & NOTIFICATIONS
    • Written documentation from owner:
      • Permission to burn structure
      • Clear title
      • Certificate of insurance cancellation
      • Acknowledgement of post-burn property condition
    • Local burn permit
    • Permission to use fire hydrants

    • EPD
  • 6. LIABILITY INSURANCE Your department may want to obtain liability insurance to cover damage to other property.

    • Inspect building for structural integrity
    • Ensure utilities disconnected
    • Remove wall, ceiling & floor coverings
    • Patch holes in walls & ceilings
    • Remove exceptional weight from above

    • Pre-cut ventilation openings
    • Remove windows & cover openings
    • Ensure doors function or remove
    • Check/operate building components
    • Make stairways safe

    • Check chimney stability
    • Remove fuel tanks
    • Remove unnecessary debris
    • Make porches/steps safe
    • Fence off ground openings

    • Cover holes in walls/ceilings
    • Check Cabinets for unsafe contents

    • Clearly mark all burn rooms
    • Clearly mark all sides of building

    • Clearly mark all exits

    • Cover windows and doors so that rapid egress can still be achieved

    • Eliminate toxic weed, hives & vermin
    • Remove hazardous vegetation
    • Protect exposures
    • Prepare fire sets

    • We have identified and describes all permits required for use in training in an acquired structure.
