  • 1. Davidson College Office of Career Services Senior Survey Class of 2009 1
  • 2. Davidson College Office of Career Services Class of 2009 Senior Survey Report Davidson College seeks to provide students with the strongest educational experience possible in all aspects of their lives. As they face the difficult choices about graduate study and postdegree employment, the college provides extensive education, support services, and programs to help students make the transition from Davidson to a new stage of life. To provide students with a resource to help them in their transition, each year the Office of Career Services collects information from the previous year’s graduating class to document their post-graduation pursuits. An impressive 95.5 percent of the Class of 2009 responded to our survey. Overview The graduates of the Class of 2009 were active in their pursuit of new opportunities in the face of very difficult economic times. Their persistence yielded strong results. Overall, 61.5 percent of the class secured full-time employment and/or service engagements, 25.5 percent pursued graduate or continuing education, 2.9 percent consciously chose to take purposeful time off from study and work, .7 percent held fellowships, and 9.4 percent were engaged in seeking employment as their primary activity. A five-year comparison of this data may be found on page 5 of this report. Full-Time Employment The field of Education leads all categories of full-time employment with 25 percent of the respondents. Business comes in at 23 percent, with Non-Profit/NGO at 11 percent. This chart shows all categories. The leading employers of the Class of 2009, excluding Davidson College, were Bank of America, AmeriCorps, Teach for America, U.S. Army, and Wells Fargo. All employers hiring multiple graduates are listed on page 6 by category. A detailed list of all employers begins on page 9. 2
  • 3. Graduate Study Of those in graduate school, degree pursuit in the Arts and Sciences accounts for 26.2 percent, 61.2 percent are pursing Professional degrees, and 12.6 percent are pursuing Continuing Education. The graph at left shows the percentage of those attending graduate school by discipline. A detailed breakdown by degree pursued may be found on page 4. The leading graduate and professional schools, based on number of enrollees, are Wake Forest University, the University of Georgia, Vanderbilt University, Harvard University, New York University, Northwestern University, and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. A detailed list of post-baccalaureate education begins on page 18. The data from this report are collected from a variety of sources, including an online survey, a telephone survey, a hard-copy survey, the Banner database, information from faculty, staff, and current students, and the Davidson Journal. In August 2009, alumni from the Class of 2009 were contacted by e-mail. Follow-up contacts were made to non-respondents via e-mail and phone calls from September through February. These efforts yielded information from 404 of the 423 members of the Class of 2009, representing a sample of 95.5 percent of the class. The results of the 404 surveys are presented herein. Greater detail about the Class of 2009’s success will be found in the following pages. Please enjoy this glimpse into their lives and dreams. The college is proud of the Class of 2009 and knows that its members will continue to make significant contributions to our global community. John Adams Director Office of Career Services Davidson College March 2010 3
