1. Four Million 2015 Toyota Highlander SUVs And Counting

If you love driving SUVs and you’re a fan of Toyota vehicles, you’re in luck: one of the
automaker’s most popular, and one of our favorites here at Midtown Toyota, is built right next
door. It’s the 2015 Toyota Highlander, and the plant that builds the popular SUV, and its team of
4,700 employees, recently built their four-millionth.
According to Norm Bafunno, President of Toyota Indiana, the plant that builds the 2015 Toyota
Highlander, “We broke ground here almost 19 years ago to produce Toyota’s first full-size
pickup truck, the Tundra… Since then, change has been constant. We added the Sequoia full-
size SUV and Sienna minivan, shifted our Tundra production to San Antonio, Texas, and
brought in the Highlander and Highlander Hybrid midsize SUVs. 4 million vehicles may seem
staggering, but our team rose to the occasion
every time an opportunity presented itself.”
The four-millionth Highlander produced was a
2015 Toyota Highlander Hybrid painted in
gleaming Blizzard Pearl paint, and it signified
a huge accomplishment for the plant, in a
state with fewer total vehicles registered than
the plant has built.
And according to Toyota, many of those
vehicles travel much farther than just next
door to our Chicago Toyota dealership, or
even within our own national borders. The
automaker reports that some 42,000-plus
vehicles travel to at least 20 countries, and counting, where they will bring enjoyment and
adventure to SUV drivers just as they do here at Midtown Toyota and in the Chicagoland area.
And that’s an accomplishment about which the team at the plant is very proud — and about
which employees displayed their pride with flags emblazoned with “thank you” in languages
from many of the countries to which the 2015 Toyota Highlander is exported.
It’s also an accomplishment made possible by a welcoming and supportive local community.
“This 4 millionth vehicle is only possible because of the great team effort of our team members,
suppliers and citizens of this wonderful community we all call home,” said Bafunno.
