  • 3. Data Governance, Big Data and The Cloud Abstract • Movers and shakers in the data and information management industries are talking about Big Data and The Cloud being the NEXT BIG THING, if not the NOW BIG THING. • Organizations are beginning to embrace these aspects of data management at least to the point of learning more about them with the potential of injecting them into their data and information strategies in the coming months and / or years. • The questions of the month are … – What is the impact of Big Data and the Cloud on Data Governance? – What is the impact of Data Governance on Big Data and the Cloud? 3Non-Invasive Data Governance™ is a trademark of Robert S. • 4. Data Governance, Big Data and The Cloud Abstract • Since these aspects of data management are becoming discovery topics in the least and hot topics at best … – What should organizations do to prepare for governing Big Data? – What should organizations do to prepare for governing data in the Cloud? – Will traditional data governance suffice or do we need a different type? • People in the REAL-WORLD are looking for answers to these questions. 4Non-Invasive Data Governance™ is a trademark of Robert S. • 8. Data Governance, Big Data and The Cloud Defining Data Governance • Non-Invasive Data Governance™ – Non-Invasive describes how governance is applied to assure non-threatening management of valuable data assets. – The goal is to be transparent, supportive, collaborative. – Whether that data is BIG MEDIUM , or SMALL. – Whether that data is DESKTOP, SERVER CLOUD , . 8Non-Invasive Data Governance™ is a trademark of Robert S. • 9. Data Governance, Big Data and The Cloud What is Big Data? • Big Data – Defined – “Big Data” is a term applied to data sets whose size is beyond the ability of commonly used software tools to capture, manage, and process the data within a tolerable elapsed time. Big data sizes are a constantly moving target currently ranging from a few dozen terabytes to many petabytes of data in a single data set. • 10. Data Governance, Big Data and The Cloud What is Big Data? • Big Data – The 3 V-s – In a 2001 research report and related conference presentations, then META Group analyst, Doug Laney, defined data growth challenges (and opportunities) as being three-dimensional, i.e. increases in: • Volume (amount of data), • Velocity (speed of data in/out), • Variety (range of data types, sources) From Wikipedia.com – Gartner Group 4. • 11. Data Governance, Big Data and The Cloud What is Big Data? • Big Data – Statistics – What is “Big”? – “Big Data” has emerged because we are living in a society which makes increasing use of data intensive technologies. There are 4.6 billion mobile- phone subscriptions worldwide and there are between 1 billion and 2 billion people accessing the internet. – Between 1990 and 2005, more than 1 billion people worldwide entered the middle class which means more and more people who gain money will become more literate which in turn leads to information growth. – The worlds effective capacity to exchange information through telecommunication networks was 281 petabytes in 1986, 471 petabytes in 1993, 2.2 exabytes in 2000, 65 exabytes in 2007 and it is predicted that the amount of traffic flowing over the internet will reach 667 exabytes annually by 2013. • 12. Data Governance, Big Data and The Cloud In the News • Big Data on the Net – “Big Data” is a catch phrase that has been bubbling up from the high performance computing niche of the IT market. Increasingly suppliers of processing virtualization and storage virtualization software have begun to flog “Big Data” in their presentations. Dan Kusnetzky – ZDNet.com (2010) – “Big Data” is hard to do, and can be very expensive and time consuming. Integrating revenue and cost data in order to manage end-to-end business models is a complicated and time consuming task. Some organizations outsource … how to tag and manage the process, in addition to storing the vast amounts of data required for meaningful analysis. • 13. Data Governance, Big Data and The Cloud In the News • Big Data on the Net – A Classic Rant – Let’s start with the basics: What is Big Data? I’m here to tell you that nobody really knows. The good thing about Big Data is just that. So it can be anything you want it to be. Really. Just like that nice friendly woman who wanted you to buy her a drink last night. – One of the things I noticed about Big Data is that it is always capitalized when it’s written … We don’t capitalize DATA, so why should Big Data be? I’m pretty sure that capitalization is a way to spot the birth of a silver bullet. Remember that when the next big thing, HUGE DATA, then GINORMOUS DATA is announced at next year’s EDW. I guess then big data will lose its title caps. – Love your data by using the right solutions. Karen Lopez – @datachick – InfoAdvisors Size Doesn’t Matter. Or Does It? • 16. Data Governance, Big Data and The Cloud Big Data Governance • Stewardship (one of 11 categories included in the IBM Framework to Assess Big Data Governance Maturity) – How will you address the stewardship of big data? • Extend the job description of existing stewards (e.g., customer data steward covers social media) • Appoint additional big data stewards (e.g., social media steward to deal with the unique privacy issues that are specific to that domain) • Are their jobs and data manipulation tasks documented and repeatable? – Will the data stewards be responsible for big data (e.g., integration of social media with master data management)? gathering input from legal, marketing, and other departments regarding the acceptable use. • 17. Data Governance, Big Data and The Cloud Big Data Governance • Stewardship (one of 11 categories included in the IBM Framework to Assess Big Data Governance Maturity) – Have you built a Responsibility Assignment (RACI) matrix to define the roles and responsibilities for critical data elements? – Are the data stewardship roles formalized with human resources? – Are stewards empowered to define policies for retention of big data based on regulatory requirements and business imperatives? Are these policies consistent with those for traditional systems? • 20. Data Governance, Big Data and The Cloud What is The Cloud? • The Cloud – Defined – A cloud is a visible mass of liquid droplets or frozen crystals made of water or various chemicals suspended in the atmosphere above the surface of a planetary body. – These suspended particles are also known as aerosols. Clouds in earths atmosphere are studied in the cloud physics branch of meteorology. Two processes, possibly acting together, can lead to air becoming saturated: cooling the air or adding water vapor to the air. – In general, precipitation will fall to the surface; an exception is virga, which evaporates before reaching the surface. • 21. Data Governance, Big Data and The Cloud What is The Cloud? • The Cloud – Defined – Cloud computing refers to the delivery of computing and storage capacity as a service to a heterogeneous community of end-recipients. – The name comes from the use of clouds as an abstraction for the complex infrastructure it contains in system diagrams. Cloud computing entrusts services with a users data, software and computation over a network. It has considerable overlap with software as a service (SaaS). – At the foundation of cloud computing is the broader concept of converged infrastructure and shared services. • 22. Data Governance, Big Data and The Cloud What is The Cloud? • The Cloud – In the News – Speaking with a number of industry people about peoples’ appetite for cloud adoption made me wonder if the cloud is no different than outsourcing or off-shoring … There is really no difference in the activities involved in procurement of business and IT services, and in facilitating a quick turn-around time. – In the end, it’s all about mitigating the risk associated with suppliers — onsite, offsite, outsourced, off-shored or in the new lingo, Infrastructure- As-A-Service (IAAS), Platform-As-A-Service (PAAS), Software-As-A-Service (SAAS).
