This document analyzes the impact of the March 11, 2004 Madrid train bombings on the subsequent Spanish national elections held on March 14, 2004. It discusses how the incumbent Popular Party's support for the Iraq War and its mishandling of information after the bombings led to its defeat by the opposition Socialist Party. Pre-bombing polls showed a technical tie, but the Socialist Party gained widespread support in the aftermath by questioning the government's attempts to blame Basque separatists rather than al-Qaeda for the attacks. The Socialist Party's victory led to Spain withdrawing its troops from Iraq.
