1. Tears of a Tiger Portfolio
Due: 3/16/09
(Counts as TWO test grades)
Directions: Pretend Andy is alive and it was your job to help him make better decisions. Create
a portfolio filled with tips and alternatives to Andy’s bad decisions.
See attached individual assignment sheets for Details on each of the following Required
components:
PERSONAL ESSAY - Show Andy how you overcame a tough situation. Write a Personal
essay on My Access describing something you were able to accomplish that you first
thought would be impossible (40 points).
POWER POINT ON STATISTICS - Convince Andy not to drive drunk. Find statistics on
drunk driving and make a Power Point presentation. Include pictures of cars crashed,
injuries, and other images having to do with drunken driving (10 points).
DRAWING - Encourage Andy to live instead of committing suicide by showing him what
his life would look like in ten years. Make a drawing on what Andy’s life would look
like in ten years if he did not commit suicide. He would be 27 (10 points).
ENCOURAGING LETTER – Pretend Andy did not commit suicide, but he was having
suicidal thoughts. Write a letter to Andy’s parents warning them about how Andy is
feeling. Tell his parents about the way Andy has been acting and how they could help
him (10 points).
SPORTS STARS - Research the background of sports stars to encourage Andy to be
successful (20 points).
Create an e-portfolio by creating a folder in My Documents and title it Tears of a
Tiger Portfolio. Make sure to always save your work in this folder!
2. POWER POINT ON STATISTICS

Directions: Find drunk driving statistics that would show Andy the harmful and dangerous
effects of drunk driving.
You must have:
- At least 4 slides within your slide show.
- At least two charts showing statistics on drunk driving.
- Text explaining what each chart shows.
- Pictures that relate to drunk driving.
Procedures:
Find statistics on drunk driving online by typing in “drunk driving statistics” in the Google
search engine.
Look for drunken driving statistics in the early 1990s because the book takes place
around this time.
Copy and paste statistics from the website you found onto a Power Point slide.
Insert pictures of car crashes, injuries, or anything else you think would be appropriate
for the Power Point presentation.
Explain what each chart portrays and put appropriate titles.
You can address Andy within your captions.
3. DRAWING

Directions: Encourage Andy to live instead of committing suicide by showing him what his life
would look like in ten years. Draw a picture of what Andy’s life would look like in ten years if he
had not committed suicide. He would be 27.
Will be graded on:
- How you encouraged Andy.
- Showing knowledge of Tears of a Tiger.
- Being thoughtful and creative.
Procedures:
You can choose either to draw a series of small pictures of things Andy would be
doing in ten years, or draw a detailed scene.
Try and remember everything Andy was interested in within the book. Then, using
that information, determine what you think his goals would be.
Decide whether or not Andy would be able to reach these goals. Then, draw what his
life would look like in the future after these goals were or were not reached.
On the back of the paper, write down what your drawing shows about Andy’s future.
Remember, you are trying to encourage Andy to keep living, to overcome his
obstacles and achieve his goals.
4. ENCOURAGING LETTER

Directions: Pretend Andy did not commit suicide, but he was having suicidal thoughts. Write a
letter to Andy’s parents warning them about how Andy is feeling. Tell his parents about the way
Andy has been acting and how they could help him.
Form: Should look like a real letter. Put the date on the top right hand corner of the Word
document. Put “Dear Mr. and Mrs. Jackson” below the date but should be on the left hand side
of the page. The body of the letter must be in paragraphs. At the end of your letter, on the right
hand side of the page, you should put “Sincerely” and then your name.
Your letter must include
- At least two ways Andy could get help to deal with his stress.
- At least two examples from the book that show Andy’s strange behavior
- Suggesting one way Andy’s parents can help.
Procedures:
In the first part of your letter you should express your concern for Andy’s behavior as a
friend.
Then give examples of Andy’s strange behavior within the book.
Make sure to tell his parents that you think he is having suicidal thoughts.
List different ways in which Andy could receive help in school and out of school.
Suggest ways in which his parents could help Andy.
