  3. 3. PUERTO RICO AT A GLANCE Puerto Rico at a Glance Hub of the Caribbean Accommodations PRCB Services Shipping to Puerto Rico Sports Puerto Rico Convention Center Off-Site Venues Pristine Beaches Entertainment Sighseeing Pre & Post Table of Contents Puerto Rico, with its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, has much to offer visitors. Its infrastructure is as sophisticated as it is extensive, with more than 14,000 hotel rooms, excellent transportation and far-reaching support services. Featuring a diverse culture, molded by Spanish, African, Indian and U.S. influences, the Island offers a central location where North American, Caribbean, Latin American and European visitors will feel equally at home. Only 100 miles (160 km) long and 35 miles (56 km) wide, the Island is home to almost 4 million people, including 1.5 million residing in San Juan. Other major urban areas include Ponce, Mayagüez, Caguas and Bayamón. Puerto Rico’s average temperature is 82° F (28°C). Trade winds keep costal towns cool and the temperature decreases as you travel higher into the mountains. And, as a U.S. Commonwealth, no passports or visas are required for U.S. visitors; foreign nationals should have valid passports and visas as required. We also use U.S. currency, phone and mail services and both English and Spanish are official languages. 1 San Juan
  4. 4. PUERTO RICO AT A GLANCE Puerto Rico at a Glance Hub of the Caribbean Accommodations PRCB Services Shipping to Puerto Rico Sports Puerto Rico Convention Center Off-Site Venues Pristine Beaches Entertainment Sighseeing Pre & Post Table of Contents Puerto Rico’s economy is fueled mainly by manufacturing and exporting pharmaceuticals and high-tech equipment. The Island is also one of the world’s leading rum producers with more than 80 percent of the rum sold in the U.S. originating from Puerto Rico. For meetings and conferences, Puerto Rico offers the most sophisticated technology and telecommunications available anywhere in the Caribbean. Satellite feeds, high-speed Internet, video conferencing and many other services are readily available across the Island. ECONOMY & TECHNOLOGY Puerto Rico’s geography is as diverse as the many activities and attractions your group will enjoy while visiting. The Island is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south. Its terrain ranges from palm-lined beaches on four coastlines, to rugged mountain ranges, gently rolling hills and even dry, desert-like areas. One of Puerto Rico’s most distinctive features is its designated forest reserves. The most notable is the 28,000-acre (11,331 ha) El Yunque, near San Juan, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. Also of interest is The Guajataca Forest Reserve, with 25 miles (40.2 km) of trails through karst landscapes, and the Guánica Dry Forest Reserve, one of the finest examples of a tropical, dry coastal forest in the world, featuring the largest bird population on the Island. There are also famous glowing lagoons, or bioluminescent bays, in Puerto Rico. Two of the bays are located in the eastern region, Las Croabas in Fajardo and Mosquito Bay in Vieques. Another is located off the southwest coast near La Parguera, and is one of the Island’s most popular attractions. The bays feature billions of aquatic microorganisms that lend a magic glow to star-lit evenings. GEOGRAPHY 2 San Juan

PUERTO RICO AT A GLANCE Puerto Rico at a Glance Hub of the Caribbean Accommodations PRCB Services Shipping to Puerto Rico Sports Puerto Rico Convention Center Off-Site Venues Pristine Beaches Entertainment Sighseeing Pre & Post Table of Contents To the west of San Juan is the Río Camuy Cave Park, one of the largest cave systems in the Western Hemisphere. Guided tours include the world’s third largest underground river and a 400-foot (122 m) sinkhole. On the Island’s northern coast is the world’s largest radio telescope whose 20-acre (8 ha) dish is built into a natural geological feature. On the southwest corner lies San Germán, a town known for its opulent homes and the Porta Coeli Church, a 17th-century chapel, now a religious art museum. Mayagüez, the third largest city, is home to the University of Puerto Rico Engineering and Science campus as well as magnificent botanical gardens. Located on the southern coast is Puerto Rico’s second largest city, Ponce. The heart of this historic city dates back to the 17th century and has been declared a national treasure. Similar to Old San Juan, the city is brimming with beautiful churches, fountains, plazas and highly decorative colonial homes. Highlights of the city include the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the brightly painted Parque de Bombas – a former firehouse. Ponce also is home to the famed Ponce Museum of Art, housing over 4,500 paintings, 400 sculptures and three gardens. A short drive away, visitors will find a restored coffee plantation. GEOGRAPHY Puerto Rico is a haven for shoppers from all over the Caribbean and beyond. Quaint shops in Old San Juan abound with jewelry and handicrafts such as cuatros and güiros, locally made musical instruments and masks. The Island also boasts shopping malls such as Plaza Las Américas, the Caribbean’s largest shopping complex featuring more thah 300 stores, Plaza Carolina with over 240 stores and more than 150 stores in Plaza del Sol in Bayamón. Outlet stores on the Island include The Outlet Mall 66 and Prime Outlets Puerto Rico. A SHOPPER’S PARADISE 3 San Juan

Offering an array of things to see and do, the city is split into three distinct areas – Old San Juan, the beaches and the business district. 21 San Juan
  24. 24. SAN JUAN Puerto Rico at a Glance Hub of the Caribbean Accommodations PRCB Services Shipping to Puerto Rico Sports Puerto Rico Convention Center Off-Site Venues Pristine Beaches Entertainment Sighseeing Pre & Post Table of Contents A leisurely walking tour of Old San Juan includes several of the oldest surviving European structures in the New World. Enclosed by a massive wall, constructed when the city was still a military outpost, the 500-year-old neighborhood includes more than 400 carefully restored 16th and 17th century Spanish colonial buildings. The streets of Old San Juan, paved with adoquines — a blue stone cast from furnace slag — are home to churches, fortresses, mansions, commercial buildings, plazas and charming colonial homes that house restaurants, shops and galleries. Among Old San Juan’s main attractions are Forts San Cristóbal and San Felipe del Morro with its 18-foot (6 m) thick walls at the harbor’s entrance. La Puerta de San Juan is also a sight to behold. The strong, heavy wooden gate was the official entrance for those who came to Puerto Rico aboard sailing ships during its colonization period. Up a block is the San Juan Cathedral, one of the few examples of medieval architecture in the Americas. The San José Church, also in close proximity to the area’s other historic landmarks, is the second oldest church in the Western Hemisphere. La Fortaleza, originally built as a defense fort in 1540, has been the Governor’s residence for centuries and was designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations (UNESCO) during the early 80’s. Equally magnificent is San Juan’s City Hall, which took more than 180 years to construct. Completed in 1789, the building underwent major renovations in the 1840s, providing its present-day facade, intended by its builders to be an exact replica of Madrid’s City Hall. To experience the area’s rich culture first-hand and to purchase local handicrafts, visit El Paseo de la Princesa where artisans occasionally display and sell their work. OLD SAN JUAN 22 San Juan

The San Juan Museum of Art and History, originally built in 1855 as a market, is now a robust cultural center showcasing Puerto Rican art and music and is host to numerous concerts and festivals throughout the year. Aside from its many historic and cultural attractions, Old San Juan features several squares that have become favorite meeting places for locals and tourists. At the center of Plaza San José stands a bronze statue of Juan Ponce de León, constructed from British cannons captured during Sir Ralph Abercromby’s attack in 1797. Abutting Plaza San José is the Plaza del Quinto Centenario. Opened in 1992, the plaza is the cornerstone of Puerto Rico’s commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ discovery of the New World. Its centerpiece is a 75-foot (23 m) totemic sculpture in black granite and ceramics, constructed by Jaime Suárez, one of Puerto Rico’s foremost artists. The Plaza de Armas is Old San Juan’s main square and has served as a social meeting place for generations. Its four statues, representing the different seasons, are more than 100 years old. Other notable plazas include The Columbus Square, The Plaza of the Procession and the Plaza de Hostos. To enjoy a magnificent view of the harbor, city and mountains, look no further than the Parque de las Palomas, which houses hundreds of pigeons. Located at the top of the city wall, it overlooks the restored La Princesa, the former city jail, now a neoclassical government office building featuring contemporary Puerto Rican art.
