  • The general secretary of the Prison Officers Association (POA), Brian Caton stated that “Many people enter come into the prison system and go out the other end, not experiencing any form of punishment because out in society their lives are worse than in prison”.

    • 2. Aims of Prison <ul><li>There are 4 main aims of the prison service; </li></ul><ul><ul><li>to punish </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>to rehabilitate </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>to protect </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>to deter </li></ul></ul>
    • 3. Punishment <ul><li>According to the Home Office prison is designed to “punish offenders who commit serious offences”. </li></ul><ul><li>Some would argue it does as people are segregated and locked up- in Belmarsh people are locked up for 16 hours. </li></ul><ul><li>Others would say it doesn’t as some prisons allow prisoners allow more freedom. </li></ul>
    • 4. Rehabilitation <ul><li>Drugs abuse is a big problem in prisons. </li></ul><ul><li>Home Office study into drug use and treatment found that out of 1880 males in prison in 2003, 73% had used dugs in the year prior to their conviction with 54% using an illegal substance once a day. </li></ul><ul><li>Rehab schemes now being run in all prisons- CARATs are one of these. </li></ul>
    • 5. Deter <ul><li>Prison is supposed to deter prisoners from re-offending and deter people from committing crime in the first place. </li></ul><ul><li>The majority of people do not commit crimes suggesting prison does work. </li></ul><ul><li>Re-offending rates are at an all time high suggesting it may not be working. </li></ul>

Protection <ul><li>Prison is designed to protect the public from those who break the law. </li></ul><ul><li>Some would argue this is happening as the prison population is now over 79,000- the highest its ever been. </li></ul><ul><li>Others would say that this overcrowding is making it more difficult for prisons to be secure locations. </li></ul>
