  • ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIP Boyle County Quarterly Employment Census: Q4, 2012Based upon a confidential quarterly report compiled by the Boyle County Industrial Foundation(BCIF), the Danville/Boyle County Economic Development Partnership (EDP) presents thefollowing general employment data for an index of representative Boyle County employers for Q42012 (October 1 – December 31) with comparisons to past quarters as well as to previous years.INDUSTRIAL EMPLOYMENT: BCIF monitored employment for 18 Boyle County industriesthat employ 25 or more employees. One (1) firm did not respond, so its employment level washeld constant. Current and past quarter employment levels within the last year are as follows:Q4—2012 Q3—2012 Q2—2012 Q1—20123,148 3,329 3199 3044Net Change: - 181 - 51 + 104Employment at the end of Q4 was impacted by seasonal reductions in temporary employees at twofacilities in addition to other industries remaining level in their employment numbers. Red WingShoe Company closed effective December 31, 2012, with a loss of 68 jobs. This reduction will bereflected in the next quarterly census, and Red Wing will be removed from the census index.Comparing the status of Boyle County’s industrial employment as of December 31, 2012, withprevious employment levels in the previous four years (2008 – 2011), Q4 yields the following netemployment changes:Q4—2012 Q4—2011 Q4—2010 Q4—2009 Q4—20083,148 3,122 3,348 3,270 3,711Net Changes: + 26 - 200 - 122 - 563NON-INDUSTRIAL EMPLOYMENT: The BCIF tracks the self-reported employment ofeleven (11) non-industrial employers, in both private and public sectors, with over 100employees. BCIF tracks health care, retail, education, banking, government, and transportationsectors. Two (2) firms did not respond, so their employment levels were held constant. Current andpast quarter employment levels within the last year are as follows:Q4—2012 Q3—2012 Q2—2012 Q1—20123,672 3,869 3,801 3,842Net Changes: - 197 - 129 - 170
  • Boyle County Quarterly Employment Census: Q4, 2012Page 2The primary impact to the non-industrial index was the employment reduction of 135 jobs byNorfolk Southern Corporation due to the company’s crew change relocation from the DanvilleTerminal to Burnside, Kentucky. Norfolk Southern only responds to this employment census on anannual basis. Therefore, Norfolk Southern’s reduction was completed over the course of 2012rather than in Q4 alone. With this reduction, Norfolk Southern falls below the threshold to beincluded in this segment of the census index.Comparing the status of Boyle County’s non-industrial employment as of December 31, 2012, withprevious employment levels in two (2) previous years, Q4 yields the following net employmentchanges:Q4—2012 Q4—2011 Q4—20103,672 3,851 3,869Net Changes: - 179 - 197TOTAL OVERALL EMPLOYMENT: In light of the above statistics, total employment forBoyle County in Q4 2012 with previous quarter and a 2-year comparison is as follows:Q4—2012 Q3—2012 Q4—2011 Q4—20106,820 7198 6,973 7,217Net Changes: - 378 - 153 - 397OVERALL LABOR FORCE STATISTICS: For all sectors of the Boyle County economy, theKentucky Office of Employment & Training reports the following data for Boyle Countians in themost recent quarters available: Dec ’12 Sep ’12 ChangeEmployed 11,313 11,196 + 117Unemployed 1,169 1,135 + 34Unemployment Rate 9.4% 9.2% + 0.2%An annual comparison of unemployment rates reveals the following: Dec ’12 Dec ‘11 ChangeUnemployment Rate 9.2% 10.3% - 0.9%
