Lab 2-7th Grade

  1. 1. Environmental Science: The Air You Breathe Davidson Students Volunteer for Science Training Presentation Spring, 2011 7 th Grade
  2. 2. IMPORTANT! <ul><li>This lab is a follow up to Lab 1. Be sure to conclude that lab before moving on to this one. </li></ul><ul><li>This lab requires the use of computers and, if possible, newspapers. The team liaison for each group should contact the teacher ahead of time so that the teachercan secure a computer lab and newspapers. </li></ul>

Instructions <ul><li>This lab is easy and straightforward. </li></ul><ul><li>Split the kids up based on the number of computers available. </li></ul><ul><li>If the kids have to share computers, try to group them according to where they live if at all possible. </li></ul><ul><li>Plan on allowing the kids to have 30 minutes answering the following questions. </li></ul><ul><li>After they have finished answering them, come together and discuss their findings as a whole. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Was there anything in common amongst the groups? What was different? Etc. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Review Lab 1 and draw conclusions based off of Lab 1 and this lab to help the students get a better understanding about pollutants and their overall effects as this is the LAST LAB on environmental science for 7 th grade! </li></ul></ul>

Lab Questions <ul><li>While using the computers, have the kids answer the following questions (all questions will not require the computer): </li></ul><ul><li>Where do you live? </li></ul><ul><li>What are the primary pollutants in the area? </li></ul><ul><li>What do you think are the main sources of these air pollutants? </li></ul><ul><li>How might air pollution affect the health of people living in your area? </li></ul><ul><li>How might the air quality in your area change over the course of a year? Over the course of a day? </li></ul><ul><li>How does air pollution affect your life? Describe any health problems that you or anyone you that you know has that are caused or aggravated by air pollution. </li></ul>

Describe any health problems that you or anyone you that you know has that are caused or aggravated by air pollution. </li></ul><ul><li>What types of indoor air pollutants do you encounter day to day? </li></ul><ul><li>What steps can be taken to reduce air pollution in your area? </li></ul><ul><li>What steps can you take in your daily life to help improve local air quality? </li></ul><ul><li>What types of laws or regulations have been put into place in your area to reduce air pollution? </li></ul>
