2. Hopeville
This is Hopeville a building dating back to 1800 it symbolizes the pride and hope of
our bank in Karnataka.
Hopeville modeled on the Greek Revival Style was built at a time when Bangalore had
begun to emerge as the principal garrison town of the British in the State of
Mysore in the early nineteenth century. Soon handsome classical public building
appeared and together with a conscious policy of civic improvement imparted to
Bangalore by the 1860 an air of a garden city.
Among those who resided in Hopeville was C B Saunders the Judicial Commissioner
of Mysore who held charge of Mysore State for a while after Mark Cubbon, the
Commissioner of Mysore resigned from his post in 1861, Saunders later became
British Resident in Hyderabad between 1868 and 1872 and moved to what is now the
Governors’ Residence or Raj Bhavan.
Four years after the Bank of Madras a forerunner of the State Bank of India
opened a branch in Bangalore in 1864 purchased Hopeville together with its land
measuring more than twelve acres from Charles James Green a retired Major
General of the Madras Army at Rupees Thirty Thousand.
The majestic Hopeville is not only the pride of State Bank of India but also of the
City of Bangalore.
