Slide 2: What were Roman laws like? •Dealt with serious eg murder and not so serious eg fighting •Also dealt with cleanliness – homeowners responsible for street outside house •Children learnt the laws at school Who tackled crime? •No police force •Patrols introduced 6A.D. By Augustus – 5000 soldiers to stop riots; 7000 vigiles to patrol the night and put out fires; 9000 Praetorian Guards to protect the Emperor •No crime investigation – only a direct response to crime •Therefore very little crime solved Could a criminal get a fair trial? •Minor crimes in a Magistrate’s Court •Victim had to get the criminal and the evidence •Serious crimes go before judge and jury •Innocent until proven guilty Punishments •To deter others – therefore BRUTAL
