    • 4. Introduction
      • Spin-off company from Siemens VDO/Continental
      • Independent since November 1st, 2007
      • 20+ years of experience in:
        • digital map related processes,
        • tooling,
        • navigation data supply chain,
        • automotive requirements and quality
      • Data aggregation, map compilation, map testing

    • 8. Digital Maps and Quality Copyright © Mapscape B.V. | J.H. Van Moll | 2008-09 “ In 200 meters turn right” DESTINATION
    • 9. Digital Maps and Quality
      • Truth value of data (e.g. Points of Interest POIs )
        • Select a POI „docter“ and be guided to a private address instead of the medical center
        • Select POI „McDonalds“ in a harbor and it turns out that the restaurant is on the ferry boat (...that just left the harbor)
        • „ Non-ethical“ coding: former concentration camps coded as „tourist attraction“

      • Recently conducted UK research:
      • > 300.000 accidents caused by navigation devices
      • ‘ blind’ follow-up of guidance advice: > 1.5 million drivers performed dangerous manoeuvres
Driver (72) caused a severe traffic accident by entering an exit-ramp of a highway near Cologne
    • 10. Challenges of map verification
      • Facts:
      • a map database represents a physical reality and when data elements are combined, they create a semantic meaning
      • Large amounts of multi-sourced data (..can‘t test all)
      • Reality continually changes !!
      Copyright © Mapscape B.V. | J.H. Van Moll | 2008-09
      • How to measure representativeness/correctness of the data?
      • How to determine acceptance criteria?
      • How to express map quality?
      For a UK map: # chains > 3.500.000 # nodes > 2.600.000
    • 11. Verification Approaches
      • Logical analysis approach
        • Focus on detection and analysis of logical map defects and inconsistencies, risk-based
        • Quality profile guides in assessing severity of map defects
      Copyright © Mapscape B.V. | J.H. Van Moll | 2008-09 M Logical analysis Analyse results R Q-profile Map Specs ? Determine Pass/Fail Full or semi-automatic verification R = P * I (I leads)

    • 14. Towards a Quantitative Quality Model Copyright © Mapscape B.V. | J.H. Van Moll | 2008-09 In-lab data verification Field testing POI comparisons Identify dimensions of quality Identify quality requirements & acceptance criteria Quality profile Refine Internal use for map validation services User experience Automotive requirements Position as an industry reference Identify and develop test technology Test methods Novelty: the application of ‘quality modeling’ to the domain of data, instead of physical products

    • 16. Our Experiences
      • Verifying the data in map databases is a specific area of verification, different from other types of data typically encountered in databases (e.g. financial, administrative, logistical environments)
      • Enormous growth of data volumes (e.g. new geographic regions) necessitates an effective and efficient verification process/approach
      • No industry consensus on map quality (objective quality reference needed)
      • Quality Model is perceived as strong marketing/company profiling instrument
      • Model is used for process improvement projects at customers (data suppliers)
