  • Conquer Your Fears and Reach Your Goals Deb Bailey Coaching www.dbaileycoach.com
  • What Happens When Fear Gets in The Way?
    • You feel as though you are going in circles
    • You beat yourself up with negative “self talk”
    • You become paralyzed – afraid to make the “wrong” decision
  • Why Is Change So Difficult?
    • We’re in habitual behaviors
    • We live by our perceptions – our “story”
    • We want to stay with what is familiar and comfortable
    • We don’t trust our own instincts
  • Conquer Your Fears and Reach Your Goals
    • "We can't solve problems by using the same
    • kind of thinking we used when we created
    • them." -Albert Einstein, physicist, Nobel
    • laureate
  • What Triggers the Fear?
    • Fear has been called, “False Expectations Appearing Real”
    • It’s part of a natural “fight or flight” response to possible danger
    • A bad past experience can trigger bad or fearful feelings causing us to stop doing what is making us uncomfortable
  • What’s Your Story?
    • “ I’ve always struggled and I always will.”
    • “ I had a tough childhood.”
    • “ Those people get all the breaks.”
    • Our “Story” describes the way we look at our experiences in the world.
  • What Keeps Us Stuck in Our Story?
    • Using coping mechanisms such as over-working, drinking excessively, overeating, eating disorders, chemical dependency, etc. which leads to…
    • Tuning out or “sleepwalking” through our lives because we have…
    • Fear that we may have to change if we address certain issues in our lives.
  • Why Do We Take 1 Step Forward & 2 Steps Back?
    • Our progress conflicts with our story.
    • We make one change, then fall back into old behaviors because we don’t maintain our new behavior.
    • In order to maintain our new behavior we have to be aware or what triggers us to return to old, comfortable behaviors.
  • Conquer Your Fears and Reach Your Goals
    • “ Some people change when they see the light, others when they feel the heat.” – Caroline Schoeder
  • Steps to Conquer the Fear & Move Forward
    • Use positive self-talk instead of beating yourself up
    • “ I always screw up!”
    • “ I may not have made good choices in the past, but I can make different choices right now.”
    • “ I tried that before and it didn’t work!”
    • “ That was a different situation and has nothing to do with this one.”
  • Steps to Conquer the Fear & Move Forward
    • Don’t blame yourself for what has happened in the past.
    • Accept where you are right now in your life.
    • Keep a journal and write down your current thoughts and feelings and goals for the future.
  • Steps to Conquer the Fear & Move Forward
    • See that change is a process and will take time.
    • Don’t anticipate a result – you don’t know what will happen until it actually does.
  • Steps to Conquer the Fear & Move Forward
    • Accept that discomfort is natural when you are doing something unfamiliar
    • Trust your “gut” instincts – if it feels totally wrong for you, don’t do it. If it’s just “stage fright” then the discomfort will be temporary and will disappear once you get started.
  • Conquer Your Fears and Reach Your Goals
    • “ Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the entire staircase, just take the first step.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
    • The fear will not disappear – instead learn to move through the fear in order to take steps toward your goals.
  • Conquer Your Fears and Reach Your Goals
    • What people say you cannot do, you try and find that you can.” -Henry David Thoreau
    • Remember that discomfort can be a sign that you are about to challenge yourself – and make the leap to a higher level.
