- This past July on stage at our annual conference, Fusion, D2L unveiled that in partnership with YouSeeU, the Brightspace Learning Environment would include a Virtual Classroom. The D2L Brightspace partnership reflects our ongoing commitment to improving learning experiences for students on a large scale, because in the 21st century classroom, students deserve more authenticity, collaboration, and engagement
- But do students entering the workforce have these skills that employers are looking for? But when we look at the skills college grads have coming into the workforce, this is what we see. If students are meant to be taught these sorts of skills starting in early years, why is there such a big gap between the skills employers want, and the skills that college graduates have?
- We all know this is a great idea. But if you’ve tried using web conferencing – you know it’s hard. That’s why we don’t do more of it. The administrative tasks are just too much a hassle: Managing Calendar invites; Entering Email addresses; Recording and Uploading sessions. When you have to do all of the administrative tasks -- Managing Calendar invites; Entering Email addresses; Recording and Uploading sessions – outside of the LMS, it’s a real hassle. So you just end up not doing it.

- When you don’t have the right tools, or the resources to teach these skills, it’s hard to do. Traditional assessments are often written response, true/false, or multiple choice with one right answer. Those types of assessments may work well for evaluating certain types of knowledge, but they don’t do as good a job testing application of learned skills. --- Sometimes there are assessments that do evaluate these effectively: speeches, presentations, role-plays, etc. However these often require traditional classroom settings with in-person attendance. That means there’s only so much time that can be dedicated to actually practicing and assessing these skills, and only so much time an instructor can devote to providing feedback. It becomes even more difficult as the class size increases. Maybe group presentations happen instead of individuals to save on time. Maybe only certain students get to participate in role plays while the others observe. --- In any case: teaching and assessing these skills is difficult; even more so in an online-only environment.
