Editor's Notes
This session will demonstrate how to setup and enable the ability to create community groups in the learning environment. As previous Angel users, our institution began to rely heavily on the Desire2Learn Learning Environment to connect with various communities of learners (programs, special interest groups, etc.). We learned how to use course shells in the Desire2Learn Learning Environment to accomplish the same goals.
This is the natural flow of events as they should happen. I’ll present them a little out of order to focus on the D2L side of things I think you’re most interested in.
Search for or select a template from the dropdown list. If you haven’t yet created a template for communities, you can use the first option “Create a new template.”
We currently have only 2 templates for communities – one general and one specifically for the School of Education. You can create as many as you want to based on your structural needs. EDU has its own because the structure in roles & permissions gives their admins access to all EDU communities without having to be enrolled in them on the classlist.
Setup details on the group then follow the wizard to complete the setup. Two things to note: We try to always use “Community Group” or something similar in the offering name and have a Semester called Communities Area. I also don’t usually mark “Registration” at this point in the process, but instead open the course to make that change because it is more comprehensive.
Create a form with specific fields for this group particularly, or activate a common form you’ve established with just First Name, Last Name, and Major. SAVE.
Establish any restrictions necessary for the group.
Be sure to change the “Role to Register As” so that users are enrolled at the correct permission level – usually student! You may choose to send enrollment and rejection emails as you will. I usually leave them on.Approve Enrollments should be UNCHECKED if you want open enrollment – anyone in your LE can sign up and immediately see the course at the level of the role they are enrolled in as. CHECK if you have an administrator who wants to review enrollment requests manually. CAUTION – no notification is sent when someone requests enrollment.DO NOT CHECK Allow New Users unless you want others outside the LE to be able to create a local account and login to the group. SAVE your changes on this page before moving on.
This setup required a special role w/permission to edit the self-registration area (example later). Could also allow existing instructor access, but we weren’t comfortable with that option.
Use cautiously because custom wording is not referred to in D2L documentation.
