Making your facility more energy efficient will save you money in utility bills - and help the environment too.

But making your building more energy efficient can require significant capital investment.

How can you get the funds to make the changes you need to - especially if you're required to conform to new efficiency standards? With so many technology vendors knocking on your doors peddling their new products, how can you make an informed decision on how to move forward with the smartest, most proven retrofit projects?

Get the answers - and learn about green jobs training programs - in this presentation from CrunchEnergy!

    5. 5. Agenda
Introduction
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009
Path of Recovery Funds from Federal Government to Local Level Marketers & Brokers
Green Jobs
Energy Audits
Ways to Save Energy
Conclusion
Questions
6. 6. Introduction
During the current Administration there is a constant drum beat of 'green' jobs, jobs, jobs, and more jobs while addressing the consequences of violent climate change
Over one US$1 trillion has been invested of tax payer money by the American government to support the domestic economy to reduce the loss of jobs while over 15,000,000 Americans remain jobless
Violent weather events are projected to increase domestically and overseas
The costs of fossil fuels will continue to increase and have a negative drag on American and global markets
7. 7. Introduction
In Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland Region over $313 million in Federal stimulus funds have been allocated for energy audits, energy efficiency retrofits, and weatherization projects among other green construction projects
At last report from the Federal government less than eight percent [8%] of these funds have been allocated and directed to the intended purposes
8. 8. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009
Four immediate goals:
Create new jobs and save existing ones
Spur economic activity and invest in long-term sustainable growth
Reduce the dependence on fossil fuels while increasing alternative energy sources
Foster unprecedented levels of accountability and transparency in government spending
9. 9. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009
The Recovery Act intends to achieve those goals by:
Providing $288 billion in tax cuts and benefitsfor millions of working families and businesses
Increasing federal funds for education and health care as well as entitlement programs (e.g., extending unemployment benefits) by $224 billion
Making $275 billion available for federal contracts, grants and loans
Requiring recipients of Recovery funds to report quarterly on how they are using the money
10. 10. Path of Recovery Funds from the Federal Government to the Local Level
Congress appropriates Recovery Act funds to federal agencies
Federal agencies make funds available to state and local governments or directly to academia, businesses, and organizations
Federal agencies also provide entitlements and tax credits covered by Recovery Act to create new ‘green’ jobs while saving more traditional ones
11. 11. Path of Recovery Funds from the Federal Government to the Local Level
State and local governments make Recovery funds available for contracts and grants to academia, businesses, and organizations. State agencies also administer Recovery funds for unemployment compensation
As academia, businesses, and organizations receive funds directly from a federal agency these are expected to make new hires or save existing employees as needed for the project
26. 26. The Green Jobs / Green New York Act (A8901 / S5888), which passed both the New York Assembly and Senate, could be a model for other states
The legislation sets the goal of implementing energy efficient retrofits in one million buildings over the next five years and creating approximately 14,000 family-sustaining jobs
Efficiency measures help combat climate change, produce cost savings across the economy, reduce pressures on the electrical grid and provide public health benefits
Green Jobs
27. 27. Green Jobs
The program will be funded with revenue raised by the auction of carbon emission credits through the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI , aka “Reggie“)
The bill allocates $112 million from these auctions to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).
These funds will be used to leverage private and federal investments
28. 28. Green Jobs
NYSERDA will establish a revolving loan program to provide up to $13,000 per residential customer to retrofit a home, and up to $26,000 to retrofit each qualifying business
Target: Energy usage will be reduced by 30-40%
In partnership with the NY Department of Labor, NYSERDA will also create workforce training programs throughout the state
29. 29. Energy Audits
Certified Energy Auditor
“Whole Structure“ Assessment
The assessment is an energy and safety evaluation of the home or business facility that includes a visual inspection of lighting, appliances, equipment, as well as performance testing of the ventilation and mechanical systems, building tightness, and insulation levels that will result in a scope of work outlining recommended energy efficiency improvements
30. 30. Energy Audits
An energy audit is the examination of your building’s energy usage, loss, heat gains, and the potential for the reduction in energy consumption
Loss from waste
Inefficiencies
Bad conservation
Aging appliances and equipment
Faulty insulation and/or building materials
Wear/age of the facility
Potential for the production of alternative energy
31. 31. Energy Audits
Increasing your building’s energy
efficiency can make it
More comfortable
More durable
Reduce electric, gas, and heating oil expenses
Reduce insurance costs
Reduce maintenance costs
Increase profit margins
A healthier environment for staff/tenants
Energy efficiency means doing more with less energy
