The Language of Fashion: Evolution through time fashion show begins with fashion dating back to the 1940’s and 1960’s. Scene one will feature the 1940’s model on the left, surrounded by economic factors that effected this decades attire such as World War II. Displayed through the fashions, the audience will gather how women were generally, treated as the lower gender at this point in time expected to work in factories as well as take care of the children. Fashion trends were military in look with padded shoulders and knee length dresses, accessorized with stylish hats and black gloves. Scene two will consist of 1960’s models that will also project major economic factors that also effected this decade. The presidential reign of John. F. Kennedy and a stereotypical diagnosis that women were expected to be stay-at-home moms also affected attire. Fashion trends had significantly grown provocative being influenced by Jackie Kennedy, with bee-hive-like hair, oversized jewelry and subtle pink tones accentuated on sleeveless, thigh length dresses.

This pie chart displays how the economic factors over the past 50 years effected the retail sales of the fashion world. For example: From the 1940’s to 1950’s the economy was recovering from the great depression, where all sales dropped as a result of a 1930’s recession. In the 1960’s and 1970’s sales begin to slowly increase as the economy was in full recovery and the war was over. This was also the beginning of gender equality, and was highly reflective in economy as women began to shop and dress more appealing. Lastly, in the 1980’s to 1990’s fashion sales sky-rocketed as economic times became prosperous, women were making their way into the career world, and Canada saw it’s first female Prime Minister. With regards to the current 21 st century and the unknown future, fashion sales have been at a constant high and appear to stay so, in a society where appearance is vital.

In scene five of The Language of Fashion: Evolution through time fashion show, the audience will view the vibrant 1970’s and 1980’s. To the left is a 1970’s model, the audience will be able to grasp through the models attire just how funky and far-out the fashions were. To the far left are economic factors that effected the way women dressed such as the women’s liberation movement, black history and some of history’s most notable musicians such as the Bee Gees. To the right are 1980’s fashions, the audience will also be able to grasp how the economic times effected the attire that adorned a women's body. To the far left, economic factors such as technology, high interest rates and the boom of fashion designers such as Calvin Klein as well as the iconic Madonna were highly reflective on fashion.

Fashion Era’s & Coinciding Economic factors Depending upon the current economic state of the economy, the fashion world was highly reflective. In the 1950’s clothing was reflective on the economic state because of a worldwide recession that was sparked by the Wall Street crash an turned into the Great Depression. Attire was extremely conservative, dressed all in black and accessorized with black gloves or a hat. This trend continued in the 1960’s where John F. Kennedy’s presidency took a toll on the fashion world, his ravishing and stylish wife Jackie Kennedy inspired the A-line dresses, bee-hive hair and oversized jewelry of fashion crazes everywhere. Also, the 1970’s were a funky and far-out time period where economic factors such as women’s liberation movement, and inspiring music and movies such as Saturday Night Fever affected the fashion styles. This setting in time was more relaxed with flared pants and flower power t-shirts. Additionally, the 1980’s rocked it’s way into the world, one oversized perm at a time. These fashions were all about flaunting designer labels and expensive cars. Fashion retailers and designers Calvin Klein, Chanel and Juicy Couture sky rocketed, as they adorned the bodies of fashionistas everywhere. In the more modern 1990’s and current 21 st century, economic factors such as the introduction of the internet were reflective on the sexy, yet stylish ever popular two piece pantsuit with a simple blouse.

Economic Sales during the Great Depression Era

During scene eight of the fashion show, the audience will be captivated by the 1990’s and current 21 st century fashions. To the left is model Christy Turlington in the 1990’s. She models the appropriate attire that was reflective on the economic state. To the far left, are factors that affected trends such as the booming of technology and the internet, these styles helped to advocate women as they felt free to express themselves through several stylish fashion opportunities. To the right, are current day models. Today’s economy is reflective upon fashion as it’s a world where appearance is everything. Fashion designers such as Louis Vuitton, Prada and Chanel adorn the bodies of fashion seekers everywhere. In a world endless money, the fashion opportunities also seem endless. To the right are economic factors affecting the attire, such as money, designers, black to represent the unknown future and color because of the vivacious aura that style brings to people.

Influential Fashion Designers & their Struggle through economic Hardships Fashion trends not only took a hit depending on the economic state, but also the designers who created them. In the 1940’s Karl Lagerfield also known as "Kaiser Karl“ was the main designer an editor for Coco Chanel’s line of clothing, despite the 1940’s great depression and recession era, he continued to manufacture clothing, and still does today. In the 1950’s and 1960’s Emilio Pucci arose with his famous line Louis Vutton, although the economy had been recovering from the great depression at the time, his line became increasingly popular and well-known, and he proceeded to create fashion trends unlike any before. In the 1970’s and 1980’s, designers Calvin Klein, and Proctor and Gamble of Juicy Couture debuted there lines as it grabbed the hearts of fashionistas everywhere, reflective on the economy, sales drastically increased, as did the clothing lines. In the more recent 1990’s and 21 st century, clothing is reflective on pat designers. Designers that emerged in the 1940’s to now, are still the one’s adorning bodies everywhere. The current economic state is somewhat stable, as is the fashion world today.
