  • 1. 2014 Create Columbus Grants Information Packet Create Columbus Grants Rober Bickis, Grants Chair Grants@CreateColumb.us 1 Guidelines, Grant Process, and Administration About the Create Columbus Commission In 2007, Mayor Michael B. Coleman, Columbus City Council, and the Columbus Chamber of Commerce The Create Columbus Commission (CCC) is a board of young professionals (YP), appointed and funded by the Mayor and City Council President to serve as the community’s foremost thought leader on young professional interests, experiences, and priorities. Through strategic community building efforts and a targeted YP grants program, the CCC strives to make Columbus the nation’s number one place for YPs to live, work, and play. The CCC was established in 2007 by Mayor Michael B. Coleman, former Columbus City Council President Michael C. Mentel, and former Columbus Chamber of Commerce CEO Ty Marsh. Today CCC is funded through the City of Columbus and is accountable to its stakeholders, Mayor Michael B. Coleman and City Council President Andrew Ginther. For the purpose of this grant application, young professionals are broadly defined as individuals between the ages of 18-39, actively working in various professions. Mission and Purpose of the Create Columbus Grants The mission of the Create Columbus Grants Program is to support initiatives by and for young professionals that help make Columbus the best place to live, work, and raise a family. There are three goals of the Create Columbus Grants program: 1. Encourage and support residents to launch innovative, community-based initiatives with a specific young professionals component 2. Provide strategic financial support for one-time costs for events, initiatives or programs that impact young professionals 3. Improve the young professional experience in the areas of live, work, and/or play Amount of Grants and Timeline The City of Columbus will disburse, through the United Way of Central Ohio, up to $80,000 for grants in 2014. Applicants can request an amount not to exceed $10,000 for innovative efforts with broad reach. The Create Columbus Commission Grants Committee evaluates each application on its own merit. Grant committee recommendations will be presented to the full Create Columbus Commission for review. Final decisions are not up to appeal, however applicants may re-apply during the next grants cycle. Also note, the Create Columbus Commission has the discretion to reduce the amount of a grant request, or accept with conditions as they see fit. The Grants Committee may recommend one of the following four actions: • Approval for full or partial funding
  • 2. 2014 Create Columbus Grants Information Packet Create Columbus Grants Rober Bickis, Grants Chair Grants@CreateColumb.us 2 • Approval for full or partial funding with stipulations • Denial with suggestions for resubmission of request in the next grant cycle • Denial of request Key application and disbursement dates for 2014: Filing Period February 28, 2014 - April 28, 2014 Application deadline April 28, 2014 - 5:00 PM Grant funds distributed by July 31, 2014 Progress Report Due January 16, 2015 Final Report Due May 29, 2015 Eligibility and Criteria Grant applications will be accepted from non-profit organizations with 501(c)3 standing. If you are not a 501(c)3 non-profit you may partner with a 501(c)3 non-profit organization as your fiscal agent. Applicants are required to provide their IRS Letter of Designation to confirm 501(c)3 status. Please attach this document as a separate pdf document. If an applicant is using a fiscal agent, a signed authorization letter from the chair or president of the fiscal agent’s board, along with that organization’s IRS Letter of Designation must be submitted with the grant application. No exceptions. Please attach this document as a separate pdf document. Collaboration between and among young professional groups, community neighborhood groups, and nonprofit organizations is strongly encouraged. Student organizations are not eligible to receive Create Columbus Grants. Please note that the grants must be used to support and/or create initiatives with a significant young professional component. However, the application does NOT need to be submitted by a young professional or group representing young professionals. This is NOT a reimbursement grant. All receipts must be dated after grant checks have been issued.
  • 3. 2014 Create Columbus Grants Information Packet Create Columbus Grants Rober Bickis, Grants Chair Grants@CreateColumb.us 3 Grant applications must address a need in one of the following categories: LIVE: CREATE A COMPETITIVE YP QUALITY OF LIFE • Make Columbus an attractive place for YPs to want to relocate and live • Strengthen well-established and grow up-and-coming Columbus neighborhoods • Maintain an affordable cost of living • Increase the vibrancy of Downtown • Diversify and improve public transportation Work: CREATE AN ENRICHED YP CAREER EXPERIENCE • Retain and attract top YP talent that will grow our economy • Cultivate YP entrepreneurship and small business ownership • Encourage technology and innovation • Increase internship and job opportunities • Foster greater quality and access for career development experiences Play: CREATE A MORE VIBRANT YP LIFESTYLE • Improve the accessibility and affordability of entertainment and sporting events for YPs • Improve the accessibility and impact-model of community service opportunities • Cultivate a more healthy and fit lifestyle • Close cultural divides within the YP demographic • Strengthen the YP arts community • Expose the authentic and cool parts of Columbus to build community pride among YPs All grant applications will be evaluated using 4 key questions: • Is it an innovative initiative? • Does the initiative impact YP’s in Columbus positively? • Does the initiative improve the YP experience in Columbus? • Does the initiative move the needle on Columbus’ effort to become the nation’s #1 place for YP’s to live, work, and play?
  • 4. 2014 Create Columbus Grants Information Packet Create Columbus Grants Rober Bickis, Grants Chair Grants@CreateColumb.us 4 Strengths in the following will enhance the competitiveness of any application (your application should explain HOW you will do these): • Measure impact of initiative • Partnership/Collaboration (explain how other organizations, media, or community groups will be working with your organization/initiative) • Make a lasting impact or sustain the initiative beyond the life of the grant • Leverage other sources of funding or resources (fundraising, in-kind support, other grants, matching funds, revenue streams, such as admission fees or ticket or other sales, etc.) Requirements that must be met for grant to be considered: • Submitted by a 501(c)3 organization (or as fiscal agent) • Initiative implemented within City of Columbus limits • Must be used to support and/or create initiatives with a significant young professional component • Must meet all legal and procedural requirements

Lawn and Garden, Community gardens* Salaries** Daycare expense Intramural sports fees On-going operating expenses Office supplies and/or school supplies Transportation fees, rentals and gasoline Capital items Field trip fees Tables and chairs Office equipment Stipends Mass mailings Coordinator fees Alcohol Individual registration & enrollment fees Member recruitment parties *The City of Columbus partners with Franklin County and ScottsMiracle-Gro on an annual grant program to develop community gardens in central Ohio. As part of this program, non-profit organizations apply for funding, in-kind product donations, and educational classes. For more information, visit www.columbus.gov. **You may request funds to support consultant or independent contracting fees. Partnership Obligations All organizations receiving funding are required to use the Create Columbus Commission logo on promotional materials for the event, initiative, or program. The applicant must state in the application where the logo and promotional materials will be used. The Create Columbus Commission will approve all usage. Please Note Failure to submit progress reports will result in ineligibility for future funding and grant recipients will be required to return the full amount of awarded funds. Prior applicants are eligible to apply and receive a Create Columbus grant. However, they will not receive preferential treatment of any kind. No preferential treatment will be given to organizations that are affiliated with members of the Create Columbus Commission. Alternatively, affiliation with the Create Columbus Commission does not automatically disqualify applicants.

Each grant workshop offers: • Explanation of Create Columbus Grants Program and the intent of the grant funds • Review of grant application guidelines, sample application and budget, and strengths of previously awarded grants • Q & A session • Opportunity to work one-on-one, directly with the Create Columbus Grant Committee members who will be voting on the applications.
