Thou shalt not use intuition,feeling, sentiment or blind faith tomake decisions about when tostand, hit, double-down or insure.Use sound strategy, or risk wastingaway your money on the full forceof the house’s already sizeableadvantage.

Thou shalt know the differencebetween a soft and a hard hand,paying careful attention to the rules ofeach table. Remember, each tabletends to have different variations ofplay. These variations are crucial,because they affect the manyminutiae of potentially game-breakingand game-making decisions.

Thou shalt be prudent about hitting onan up-card value of more than 12. Ten-value cards are the single most commoncard value in blackjack (tens and all face-cards). Receiving a 10-value card on a 12is a bust. It’s not always wrong to hit on12, particularly if the dealer has highvalue up-card. But be wary, because onceyou bust it’s over, no matter what cardthe dealer ends up by having.

Thou shalt pay particular attention tothe table rules regarding the splittingand re-splitting of aces. Aces areextremely valuable cards in a game ofblackjack, which is why manyblackjack tables are careful to specifya limit on how many times these‘golden’ cards can be split.

Thou shalt never hit on any total of 17or more. The high statisticalprobability of busting beyond a 17 faroutweighs any potential advantageyou might derive from beating thedealer’s own total. The only exceptionto this might be when you have a soft18 and the dealer has a 10.

Thou shalt double-down when thehand calls for it. Doubling-down isalways risky. But the key is riskmanagement: risking a higherwager when that risk is called foris good strategy. Double your 10against a dealer total of 9 or less.

Thou shalt always pre-determine thebankroll before laying down a singlebet. Everyone tends to have a badgambling run at some point in theircasino careers. Don’t compound theloss by stretching yourself further thanwhat’s comfortable. This is a decisionthat needs to be made before play.Respect your own limits.

Thou shalt never stop other playersfrom making boneheaded plays. It’sthese same boneheaded players thathelp the casino pay tidy sums for yourwinnings. Thanks to the carefulapplication of various strategies, youcan ensure that the house’s naturaladvantage is reduced by a fewpercentage points.

Thou shall maintain a “poker face” ifusing careful card-countingtechniques. Casino pit bosses canoften identify card counters by theirstern and somewhat constipatedexpression. Act natural.

Thou shalt vary the bets according tothe movement of the game. Sometimesit’s useful to wager high. Other times,it’s wise to tone down the $200 chipsand play safer.
