    2. 2. “ Amazonian Podcasting Expedition” (A.P.E.): Overview <ul><li>Co-teachers will introduce the two-week (ten-day) unit about Layers of the Rainforest. </li></ul><ul><li>An overview will be given about each specific layer and its ecosystem. </li></ul><ul><li>Emphasis will be placed on the various plant life, animals, and climate of the Amazon Rainforest. </li></ul>
    3. 3. The Expedition Begins Day 1: <ul><li>Students will be introduced to the A.P.E. by listening to a Co- teacher created Podcast (or audio recording) encouraging them to join an eco-critical team of scientists that need to know more about the Amazon Rainforest. </li></ul>Play Audio File

The Expedition Begins Day 1: <ul><li>Each team will be sent on an “Amazonian Podcasting Expedition” (A.P.E) where students will begin by working in teams to conduct research on their assigned ecosystem layers. </li></ul><ul><li>To do so, students will be grouped into 4 learning teams and assigned individual tasks within the group. </li></ul>
    5. 5. The Expedition Begins Day 1: <ul><li>Students will immediately begin working in teams to conduct research on their assigned ecosystem & layers. </li></ul><ul><li>Co-teachers will act as guides to help teams navigate the Internet and printed materials. </li></ul>
    6. 6. The Expedition Begins: Welcome to the Jungle <ul><li>Where are the Rainforests? </li></ul><ul><li>Why are they in danger? </li></ul><ul><li>Why is it important to preserve them? </li></ul>
    7. 7. The Expedition Begins: Welcome to the Jungle <ul><li>What important resources and products do we obtain from rainforests? </li></ul><ul><li>All groups should answer these basic questions as well as present ideas on what we can do globally to save the rainforest. </li></ul>
    8. 8. The Journey: Days 2-5 <ul><li>Students will continue to work in teams to conduct research on their ecosystem layers. </li></ul><ul><li>Co-teachers will act as guides to help teams navigate the Internet and printed materials. </li></ul>
    9. 9. The Journey: Days 2-5 <ul><li>Co-teachers will direct students through types of multimedia rich research tools such as S treaming Videos , Webquests , Podcasts , Digital Stories , as well as Webpages . </li></ul>

The Journey: Days 2-5 <ul><li>If sufficient computers are not available, team members should rotate between using the Internet, looking through print materials, and writing down information. </li></ul><ul><li>Team members are expected to share and act respectfully towards each other and other groups at all times. </li></ul>

The Journey: Days 2-5 <ul><li>Throughout the process students will be reminded of the importance of writing their findings in their team journals. </li></ul><ul><li>The A.P.E. team will be able to evaluate the importance of their information and prepare to report back to headquarters starting on day six. </li></ul>

Findings: Day 6 <ul><li>Students will receive a radio message from headquarters in an effort to locate them. </li></ul><ul><li>After being found, students will begin by summarizing data & preparing for audio recording by condensing research into a working script. </li></ul>Radio Message from H.Q.
    14. 14. A.P.E. Findings: Day 6 <ul><li>Each question should be no more than two paragraphs in length and should transition into the next question. </li></ul><ul><li>When combined, the summarized information should be no more than 2 pages in length. </li></ul>
    15. 15. Days 7-9: A.P.E. Recordings. <ul><li>The A.P.E. Recording Specialist will show / teach students the basics of audio recording using available equipment. </li></ul><ul><li>The following slides quickly demonstrate Apple’s Garage Band 3 and Audacity for Windows </li></ul>

Audacity <ul><li>Unlike Garage Band 3, Audacity does not include pre-recorded audio loops and jingles. </li></ul><ul><li>Audacity, requires the user to know some basic audio production techniques. </li></ul><ul><li>Audacity will work on both a Mac and a P.C. </li></ul>
    22. 22. Days 7-9: A.P.E. Recordings. <ul><li>An A.P.E. Recording Specialist will be on site to help students create their Podcasts / Audio recordings. </li></ul><ul><li>(Due to limited resources, time and class size, student participation may be limited to audio recording only.) </li></ul>
    23. 23. Days 7-9: A.P.E. Recordings. <ul><li>An A.P.E. Recording Specialist will help students record an individual 1.5 minute summary of their individual findings which will be combined to make a five to seven minute Podcast / Audio Recording. </li></ul><ul><li>(Due to limited resources, time and class size, student participation may be limited to audio recording only.) </li></ul>
    24. 24. Days 7-9: A.P.E. Recordings <ul><li>While A.P.E. teams are working on their Podcast/Audio Recording, the remaining teams will spend their time creating a pamphlet about the destruction of rainforests and the importance of conservation. </li></ul><ul><li>Information must be broken down into appropriate headings and the pamphlet must contain pictures (either self created or printed). All other aspects of the pamphlet are left up to the team to decide to allow them the freedom to show their creativity. </li></ul>
    25. 25. Day 10: A.P.E. Teams Return to Base Camp <ul><li>On the concluding day of the expedition, the A.P.E. teams will be contacted once again by headquarters. What will the message be? </li></ul>
    26. 26. Day 10: A.P.E. Teams Return to Base Camp <ul><li>On the concluding day of the expedition, the A.P.E. teams will have the chance to share their information with the rest of the teams. </li></ul><ul><li>Teams will take turns presenting their Podcasts/Audio Recordings. Before playing the recordings, the teams will speak briefly about the sources of their information. </li></ul>

Teams Return to Base Camp <ul><li>To conclude the unit, the class will have a discussion about their overall experience. </li></ul><ul><li>Teams will share their feelings about researching using various multimedia, creating their first Podcasts/Audio Recordings, and working together as a team. </li></ul>
