Intergenerational Health Advocacy Project (IHAP) <ul><li>The Consumer Center developed an Intergenerational Health Advocacy Project in which high school and college students along with trained seniors provide individualized health focused computer classes to seniors. </li></ul><ul><li>It also provides an opportunity for teens to develop leadership skills, improve their self-esteem and gain a better understanding of older adults. </li></ul>

  13. 13. To use the Cyber Café: <ul><li>You first need to be a member of the Gary & Mary West Senior Wellness Center </li></ul><ul><li>To be eligible to join the center, you need to be 60 or older </li></ul>
  14. 14. Check with the friendly people at the front desk to register
  15. 15. Register in the Cyber Café <ul><li>Once you register in the Cyber Café you will have a red dot on your Senior Community Centers membership card. </li></ul>
  16. 16. Public Computers <ul><li>Computers in the Cyber Café are public computers. They are configured for general use. Much like a rental car versus your personal car. </li></ul>
  17. 17. Our Tutors & Interns <ul><li>We have tutors and interns available to help you with your computer questions. </li></ul><ul><li>Senior Computer Tutors are also members of West Senior Wellness Center. </li></ul><ul><li>Student Interns are from SDSU and local high schools. </li></ul>

  22. 22. Chinese Computer Literacy Class <ul><li>On Fridays from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm we offer our Chinese Speaking seniors a chance to practice their computer skills. </li></ul><ul><li>Maggie Mo is our instructor for this class. </li></ul>

  25. 25. Is it the Web or the Internet? <ul><li>At first you may find many of the terms used somewhat confusing </li></ul><ul><li>There is usually more than one way to do something or more than one term to define something </li></ul>
  26. 26. Browsers <ul><li>A “Browser” is a software application used to locate and display Web pages . </li></ul><ul><li>We have two browsers in the Cyber Café, Internet Explorer and Google Chrome. </li></ul>

  28. 28. Your Key to the Internet <ul><li>Email is your key to the internet. </li></ul><ul><li>To sign up for internet programs, to request information, you will need an email address. </li></ul>
  29. 29. Email <ul><li>Electronic mail is referred to as email. </li></ul><ul><li>Email predated the internet. </li></ul><ul><li>Email was a crucial tool in creating the internet. </li></ul>

Phishing <ul><li>A high-tech scam that uses spam or pop-up messages to trick you into disclosing your credit card numbers, bank account information, Social Security number, passwords, or other sensitive information </li></ul><ul><li>Do not respond to email or pop-up messages asking for your personal information </li></ul>

  41. 41. Have a question? <ul><li>You often hear “Google it” as a way to find the answer. </li></ul><ul><li>Search engines will help you find a link that may answer your question. </li></ul><ul><li>Google is our default search engine. </li></ul>
  42. 42. How do I save my files? <ul><li>Files cannot be saved on our public computers. </li></ul><ul><li>One option for many of our users is to attach the file to their email and send it to themselves. </li></ul>
  43. 43. Google Docs <ul><li>Another option available on the internet is Google Docs </li></ul><ul><li>With a Google account you can create, upload and save files in Google Docs. </li></ul>
  44. 44. Save Documents <ul><li>If you want to keep a document for reference, you can upload it to Google Docs. </li></ul>
  45. 45. Save Photos <ul><li>You can also upload a photo you want to keep </li></ul>
  46. 46. Share Docs & Security <ul><li>You can share documents with friends and relatives. </li></ul><ul><li>You can also keep the document private, or read only. </li></ul>
