(S-4) provides its customers with value-added services through consultancy and systems integration, vertical applications and software development, and sales of hardware and software. S-4’s principal offering is a specialised ERP solution used by shipping companies and customs warehouses for clearance procedures. In addition, S-4 is a certified VMware® partner with plenty of experience of implementing virtualisation solutions. So why has it selected Colt’s Enterprise Cloud, a VMware vCloud Datacenter service, to support its own business? The answer, according to Managing Director Manuel Pérez, lies in S-4’s business strategy of planning and building for the future. Investing to expand S-4 pursues a policy of continuous development of its services by creating new solutions and applications, and tailoring configurations to meet the specific needs of individual customers and market sectors. The applications S-4 develops for the logistics and export commerce sectors are used to exchange EDI messages in real time with the Spanish tax office (AEAT) and other public administration bodies. The applications’ performance, access and security levels must all be optimised, and the applications must be able to respond to business requirements at any time, in any location. “With Colt’s Enterprise Cloud, we’ve been able to define a pay- per-use model for cloud-based applications that can be accessed using site-to-site VPNs or secure SSL protocols,” explains Pérez. “Users can access the cloud from anywhere, which enables us to address a much broader range of potential customers.”

He goes on to say: “The ultimate deciding factor was that VMware, a leader in virtualisation solutions, had selected Colt as its first European distribution partner for VMware vCloud Datacenter.” Using Colt’s Enterprise Cloud to support its own business first enabled S-4 to understand the potential challenges and benefits of the solution before implementing it for customers. “This means we can confidently state that we’re offering a thoroughly tried and tested solution,” confirms Pérez. “Now, our customers have a choice between three installation models for our applications: on premises, IaaS and SaaS.” Colt Enterprise Cloud is provided as a resilient service across Colt’s data centres in Madrid and Barcelona. This, combined with redundant high-speed access, gives S-4 the speed, reliability and security it needs for its customer applications. In addition, S-4’s customers can visit the Colt data centres, giving them the peace of mind of knowing where their data is held and the ability to visualise their virtualised service.
