The average datacentre is 9-11 years old. Decision-makers need to decide whether to refresh, upgrade/refurbish their existing datacentre or consolidate, outsource or build new facilities and the inevitable fate – decommissioning. Research shows that while technology is available, the decision-making process is actually getting harder. How can you navigate through the options while mitigating risk, managing costs and meeting the business requirements?   • Intro <br /> Your data centre is ten years old. <br /> Not quite at the end of its lifecycle, but not exactly at peak efficiency either; its running costs are beginning to outweigh its usefulness and its carbon footprint is a blemish on your CSR credentials. <br />
  • How to evaluate the options <br /> Take a structured approach. This is a major consideration. You can save millions on opex in power costs or recoup millions in capex from real estate, conversely you may need to carefully plan a business case for significant capital investment <br /> We set up a programme called AIEM <br /> assess, identify, execute and Measure <br /> Specialist team created a standardised programme for short and long term efficiencies as well as creating business cases for decommission, expansion, new build methods etc <br /> We can do that because we&apos;ve 20 data centres. Our learnings can be shared and rolled out across our estate and learnings continuously fed back to the central team. This volume of data gives us the opportunity to share our learnings with the market. <br />
  • Data centres built in the last 5 years have a PUE of 1.6 or below. In our experience data centres older than 9 years old have a PUE northwards of 2. In some cases a lot more, when they are actually measured. <br />
  • Towards the end of this lifecycle clear action and decisions must be made not only to improve efficiency but critically to manage risk of downtime. <br />
  • So what are your options? <br /> Short term efficiencies and risk mitigation - maximising existing assets <br /> Medium term efficiencies and risk mitigation - maximising existing assets <br /> Long term efficiencies and risk mitigation - plan B – new data centre, outsourcing, consolidation, etc <br /> The good news is it won’t necessarily mean choosing between a complete upgrade or a move to a new data centre. There are incremental steps you can take today to make measurable improvements to the efficiency of your existing premises. <br /> In this presentation we outline how to assess, plan, and execute improvements while looking at the bigger picture; when do really need to start looking at the longer term - if you are at the ‘refurb or replace’ point I’ll take you through the key considerations for making this important decision. <br />
