The oldest family-owned business in Spain – and the 17th oldest in the world – Codorníu has a track record of combining tradition with innovation to drive efficient operations, and has consistently been an early adopter of new technologies. As long ago as 1991, it started enabling interaction and dialogue with customers in its Christmas advertising spots. Tona Monedero, Grupo Codorníu’s CIO, explains in more detail: With Enterprise Cloud, ASMWS could offer Codorníu a way to increase its sales. In addition, it could consolidate the hosting of Codorníu’s corporate website and its commercial websites worldwide. The Colt solution enables ASMWS to provide centralised management with unified hosting on a single server, boosting the efficiency of Codorníu’s IT team despite the challenges of launching an online sales channel. As Monedero puts it: “To get an idea of what we’re talking about, consider the data from our 2010 Christmas campaign: 38,000 votes came in via Facebook, Twitter and the blog; and the microsite received 220,000 visits. But we still weren’t selling our products online.” The Christmas period represents 40% of the company’s annual sales of its sparkling wine known as cava. So in 2012 Codorníu worked with ASM Web Services (ASMWS), an IT partner since 2008, to develop an online sales channel. That year sales totalled €235m, around 2.6% higher than in 2011. Colt’s Enterprise Cloud provides companies like ASMWS with an ideal platform for designing and implementing e-commerce and other applications for small and medium enterprises. It’s cost-effective as there’s no need for additional infrastructure. “We count on our technology partners to enable us to focus on our business, supporting the production and sales of the highest-quality wines.” Ready in time for the Christmas rush In November 2012 the Codorníu online store was implemented on the Enterprise Cloud platform at Colt’s London data centre – just in time for Codorníu’s six busiest weeks during the run-up to Christmas. The application handles all the logistics associated with 400 products and distributors.
  • 2. // For this project we needed the best provider of connectivity and virtualisation… Colt is that provider. // Tona Monedero, CIO, Grupo Codorníu At the start of the marketing campaign, the Internet access bandwidth was scaled up from 2Mbps to 20Mbps, the RAM from 8GB to 20GB and the storage from 200GB to 340GB. Colt applied these increases efficiently and, at the end of the campaign, quickly scaled the platform back to the initial configuration to optimise Codorníu’s costs. Monedero explains the advantages: “Seasonal peaks in demand, whether related to sales or production, are now easy to handle, thanks to the elasticity of Colt’s Enterprise Cloud. Similarly, the challenge of accommodating growth in our online sales channel won’t be an issue.” A smooth migration to Madrid As soon as Colt extended its Enterprise Cloud to Madrid, ASMWS migrated the Codorníu platform there, to take advantage of its proximity. Codorníu’s IT department has nothing but praise for ASMWS and Colt. As Monedero puts it: “We have complete trust in ASMWS, and for this project we needed the best provider of connectivity and virtualisation… Colt is that provider.” He continues: “Now that we’ve seen how quickly and securely we can innovate with Colt’s Enterprise Cloud, our medium-term plan is to use it as a platform for more services.” In delegating management and maintenance to ASMWS and Colt, Codorníu’s IT team is now able to support the company’s various functional areas more efficiently.
