CGHC Seven Years Strong

  2. 2. Nine days after Katrina hit, a group of street medics arrived in Algiers and began knocking on doors and asking people if they needed medical attention.
  3. 3. They were not the Red Cross or FEMA,just volunteers who answered the callsent out by Common Ground Relieffounders Malik Rahim and SharonJohnson, and came to offer first aid.
  4. 4. The volunteers rapidly grew innumber, and became part of a healthcaremovement focused on creating asustainable model for community healthcare…the Common Ground Health Clinic.
  5. 5. For the first four months, theclinic operated out of donatedspace at the Masjid Bilal, anAlgiers mosque.
  6. 6. Initially, the clinic was open 7days a week as a 24-hour first aidstation, hitting a peak of 150patients seen in one day inOctober 2005.
  7. 7. Doctors, nurses, herbalists, bodyworkers, counselors, pharmacists,acupuncturists and physicaltherapists came from around the world tovolunteer with the clinic as the First AidStation developed into a free-emergencyresponse health care clinic.
  8. 8. In the first month after the leveesbroke, a few volunteers from theclinic began scouting areas of NewOrleans in order to assesshealthcare needs on the ground.
  9. 9. They quickly realized that among the many gaps in the public healthcare infrastructure… was a source of culturallycompetent, bilingual healthcare for Latino residents and day laborers.
  10. 10. The Latino Health Outreach Project(LHOP) was formed and began settingup mobile clinics where large numbers of workers were staying. Today, LHOP continues to organizehealth clinics and projects with and for the Latino community.
  11. 11. In January 2006, Common GroundHealth Clinic moved to its currentlocation across the street from themosque.Clinic started operating four days perweek.
  12. 12. In an oldcornerstore inAlgiers, aclinic wasborn….
  13. 13. Clinic hours were staffed by localdoctors, nurses, medical studentsand community members.Until Spring 2007, most of themwere volunteers.
  14. 14. Many health care providersvolunteering at the clinic often statethat their experience reminds themwhy they went into the field ofmedicine.
  15. 15. In its first year, the clinic hadrecorded over 15,000 visits…and a strong commitment to theAlgiers neighborhood was created.
  16. 16. A major renovation in July 2007 greatly improved the space.
  17. 17. In February 2008, the clinic implemented anelectronic medical record (EMR) system that was donated by Allscripts.
  18. 18. In January 2009, the clinic receivedrecognition as a Patient Centered MedicalHome from the National Committee forQuality Assurance (NCQA).
  19. 19. The top three diagnoses seen at the clinicare hypertension, diabetes and stressmanagement— all chronic poverty-related conditions.
  20. 20. The clinic stands in contrast to thetime crunched, profit-driven, top-down environment that has become the standard in the health care industry.
  21. 21. It has become an important part of thecommunity, and continues to grow, inevery way….Here are some more highlights of the firstseven years of CGHC!

In 2012, CGHC services include: routine primary care, interpretation services in Spanish & Portuguese, dermatology, prescription assistance, wellness programs, acupuncture, classes in gardening, cooking, exercise & nutrition, advocacy, social work services, youth art workshops, herbal medicine, endocrinology and
