  • Main Point: There are many entry points for clients starting their journey to cloud. Clients start their cloud journey at many different entry points and sometimes at multiple points at the same time This is not always a linear progression. Some clients begin by optimizing their virtualization foundation for a workload, then gradually move to cloud. Others require cloud capabilities from the beginning and may start with advanced cloud or entry cloud solutions. A client may be in all of these stages w/ different workloads across their data center.
  • Power Systems offers solutions to help customers at all stages of their cloud journey. Starting with a cloud foundation built on the industry leading virtualization of PowerVM, starting self service with IBM starter Kit for Cloud, an easy to use add-on to SD/VMC and progressing to advanced cloud capabilities with ISDM & CloudBurst.

VMControl Standard Edition for Power Systems delivers enterprise-class image management capabilities for IBM i, as well as for AIX and Linux on Power, to accelerate the deployment of standardized virtualized workloads. VMControl Express Edition for Power Systems is integrated into the Systems Director Management Console (SDMC) to provide complete lifecycle management of virtualized workloads on Power Systems servers and blades.
  • IBM Starter Kit for Cloud (SKC) is a light-weight, entry cloud offering that provides affordable, easy-to-install and easy–to-use capabilities to allow clients to more rapidly move to a cloud model. IBM Starter Kit for Cloud available in Q4 2011, is an add-on to Systems Director Enterprise Edition including VMControl Enterprise Edition (pre-reqs these products) and provides: Self service portal for workload provisioning (Create/replicate assets, manage deployments & monitor activity) Image management with image tooling and library Enables creation and operation of a persistent Cloud Basic metering (can collect metering data – how much resource a user/project has used), authentication and authorization This one add-on gives customers the capability to start offering self-service capabilities to the customers, leveraging their SD/VMC cloud foundation. It is an easy way for a customer to get started with cloud.
  • This is the high-level architecture and components for IBM Starter Kit for Cloud on Power Systems. IBM intends to enhance IBM Starter Kit for Cloud on Power to allow image management support for IBM i, thus enabling image deployment for all IBM Power technology-based operating systems.
  • IBM Starter Kit for Cloud will GA Sept 16, 2011. In addition to the release of the SW, we will also be publishing cookbooks that outline reference configurations for an entry cloud based on the Power 740 express server and the PS703 BladeCenter H. These cookbooks will also outline installation and configuration guidelines, to help customers get an entry cloud up and running quickly with a pre-tested configuration.
  • In addition to the release of SKC, we will also be enabling eConfig with “one button cloud configuration” ordering. This will allow sellers to select the 740 or PS703 SKC reference configurations with 1 button in eConfig (select Rack Cloud – it automatically selects all of the components of the 740 ref. config). This will help sellers to more quickly get the pricing/component list needed for their opportunities. Additionally, CSC integration and LBS set-up services can be added to these selected configurations. Please note that while this is one button in eConfig, each of the orderable components are supported separately.
  • IBM is publishing reference configurations for IBM Starter Kit for Cloud. One on the Power 740 and one on the PS703 BCH Blade. SKC can run on any Power HW, these are just tested reference configurations for partners & clients to leverage.
  • Power Systems workload optimized systems optimize IT assets based on workloads which improve performance and scalability as well as ensure the ideal elasticity of your cloud: Reliability, availability and serviceability capabilities that deliver near continuous system availability to support mission critical workloads Faster failure identification with Light Path diagnostics can reduce identification from hours to minutes The new features of POWER7 provide features to optimize workloads - automatically and dynamically - to provide the best possible workload performance and throughput. POWER7’s per core performance give it leadership transaction computing as evidenced by the leadership SAP SD 2 Tier results on the Power 750 - along with the top throughput computing results as evidenced by the leadership SPECjbb and SPECint_rate results POWER7 with the latest announcements provide the broadest performance range of any platform on the market, giving customer more options to meet their performance needs. The Power 770 is the POWER7 successor to the 570 line of products that started with POWER5 in July 2004... extending the industry’s most popular midrange system on any OS up to 64 cores and POWER7 performance. Each node can now have more performance than a complete 16-core 570 - meaning you can get more performance in 70% less energy - or use two nodes and get more than 2X the performance in one half the space with nearly half the energy - and still have the resiliency and modularity that clients love about the 570 Power 780 provides improved performance with 4.6 to 7.5 times more performance per core compared to HP & Sun With balance system designs that automatically optimize workload performance and capacity make POWER7 workload optimized systems a great platform for enterprise cloud computing
  • Virtualization is the first key step in building a cloud infrastructure and the decision on the virtualization platform could result in limitations down the road. In order to support mission critical workloads customers need an enterprise quality of service virtualization environment/ PowerVM provides differentiated virtualization for enterprise cloud computing by providing the following capabilities: Improve utilization by driving systems to over 90% utilization Enterprise security with a virtualization solution that is Secure by design with Zero common vulnerabilities exposures (CVEs) reported against PowerVM by US CERT or by MITRE Corporation. Ensure application availability with Live Partition Mobility with VM’s of any size up to the entire system that can easily move between your POWER6 and POWER7 systems Increased availability with the capability to make Dynamic changes to any IT resource without reboot Elastic scaling from 1/10 of a core to 256 cores and can use all resources of the host server Simplified provisioning and management of virtual servers with Integrated storage virtualization for simplified provisioning, management of virtual servers and advanced virtual networking* PowerVM delivers the differentiated virtualization for enterprise cloud computing, large and small New Q4 2011 content includes: Shared Storage Pools Creates pools of storage for virtualized workloads, Improves storage utilization, simplifies administration and reduces SAN infrastructure Costs. Allows multiple systems to share common pool of storage. Live Partition Mobility Performance Improvements Improvements in performance for Live Partition Mobility Network Balancing Balances network traffic across redundant Shared Ethernet Adapters Active Memory Deduplication Detects and removes duplicate memory pages to optimize memory usage in Active Memory Sharing configurations
