  • IBM Active Cloud Engine gives users the ability to manage large numbers of files efficiently, locate the data of interest rapidly and get that data to where it is needed seamlessly. It is a “policy-driven” engine tightly coupled with file system that enables you manage “file ” data with ease, efficiency and at a scale. Technical definition: Active Cloud Engine encompasses a set of tightly integrated components (Policy Engine, Global File System, Data movers, Cluster management) which can very rapidly assess & evaluate many criteria based on policy , and then take an action : Simple actions : policy driven metadata search, place data in a specific storage pool, transparently move to another disk pool, delete/expire, backup Complex actions : offline-HSM (move to tape pool), backup, restore, replication, WAN caching, intelligent prefetching of subsets of files, incremental backup, policy can be executed on a clone or snapshot, virtualize to a single/global view of many (often physically separated or with very different characteristics) components into a single namespace. All done in automated fashion, providing more intelligent, more efficient storage with less effort managed from one place at global scales.   • 10/6 Now, I’d like to introduce a key technology: IBM Active Cloud Engine. IBM Active Cloud Engine enables policy-driven file administration. By policy-driven, I mean you can set policies, such as: All executive files get stored on the fastest storage, and Audio files and photos get stored on the lowest cost storage With Active Cloud Engine, you can manage files as they age, without impacting the way users and applications access files. You can, for example, have a policy to move all files that haven’t been accessed in a year to near-line storage. The user’s view of the directory did not change, and administrators weren’t burdened; but you’ve implemented best practices for Information Lifecycle Management. With Active Cloud Engine, performance is optimized because you can match file usage to the characteristics of the storage pool.
  • 10/6 IBM Active Cloud Engine is also implemented on IBM Scale-Out Network Attached Storage, or SONAS. Scale-Out Network Attached Storage, as the name implies, can store and manage billions of files. It can serve as a single global share drive – a C Drive for your enterprise. Active Cloud Engine for SONAS enables policy-driven administration on a very large scale. Today, we’re announcing Active Cloud Engine for SONAS also enables multi-site performance optimization, a critical capability that we’ll discuss in a moment. But first, more new news about SONAS. We’re announcing a new graphical interface that simplifies administration, using technology propagated from XIV and Storwize V7000 Unified. We also add 3 Terabyte drives to SONAS, which gives clients online file storage capacity up to 21 Petabytes per system. .   • 10/6 As I mentioned on the previous slide, IBM Active Cloud Engine has multi-site support. That means clients can support Active Clouds. Traditionally, clouds have been implemented for a data center, or for a Cloud Service Provider. If you or part of your work group are in another part of the world, you might not have fast access to the information you need to do your job. In an Active Cloud, users share a single view of files and directories in each site, based on their access permissions, of course. Files flow to the users. Users access files the same way they do in a single site environment. Instead of chasing their files, files migrate to users automatically, as needed. IBM Active Cloud Engine also implements policy-driven file distribution, so you can pre-populate remote sites with files you know people need to access. That enables fast performance for remote users.
  • 10/6 Today, we’re also announcing a Statement of Direction regarding Active Cloud Engine for Storwize V7000 Unified. We plan to deliver multi-site capabilities for this system, too. That means clients can deploy global Active Clouds, using a mix of scale-out and mid-range storage systems. Work groups around the world can get a single view of files, on demand access, and better performance than a single-site inactive cloud.
  • 10/6 In time, users will think of their files as living in the cloud, not on a particular share drive. Users can have the service levels they expect, no matter where they work. This is a significant change in the value global organizations can get from cloud computing.
