Editor's Notes
People experience a sense of loss when their own private workspace is taken away. Traditional viewpoints on workspace allocation have caused people to associate their workspace as part of their professional identity and status. Therefore, taking the private workspace away can cause strong reactions. The idea of reciprocity is important because it recognizes this loss and offers proactive mitigation strategies to keep people involvedHere are some examples of how we practiced reciprocity at Citrix:Engaging them in specific areas of floor plan design and development of social rules.Providing alternative areas/options for personalizationSwitching primary focus from individual to team identityAs part of change management activities, educating them about the variety and choice they will enjoy in exchange for their loss of personal spaceMake people feel like their voices are heard, and that they are welcome to be part of developing the solution.
Our corporate vision regarding the power of virtual computing also led us to realize that, not only should we be adopting an adaptive workplace, we should be leading the movement. We should be transforming our workplace into a reflection of the potential our products can deliver.
