  • FlexPod is a defined set of hardware and software that serves as an integrated foundation for all virtualization solutions. vSphere built on FlexPod includes NetApp storage,Cisco networking, the Cisco Unified Computing System™ (Cisco UCS®), and VMware vSphere® software in a single package. The vSphere built on FlexPod solution can help improve agility and responsiveness, reduce total cost of ownership(TCO), and increase business alignment and focus.  This session focuses on deploying an infrastructure that is capable of addressing current virtualization needs and simplifying the evolution to an IT as a service (ITaaS) infrastructure  . 
  • Many organizations perform the following steps when servicing a new applications or requirement: Collect detailed requirements. Architect and size: Work with the vendors to architect and size the system. Depending on the number of applications and the number of vendors involved, the sizing and architecting phase can take many weeks and often months. DC planning: Work with the data center team to negotiate power, floor space, and cooling requirements for the new system. Procure equipment: This phase involves many weeks of obtaining quotes, ordering, and receiving the new gear. The time it takes to deal with a large organization, plus additional shipping times, can easily take six weeks. Detailed design: This phase involves working out the exact configuration for compute configuration, network connectivity, storage layout, security, and isolation. Deploy: Configure the equipment for use. Test: Create and run a test plan to make sure that the equipment is correctly installed and meets the original requirements.By using FlexPod, many of these phases are compressed or removed altogether – customers taking the standardized approach to IT have repeatable demonstrated better than 50% faster deployment times over traditional approaches – Cisco-NetApp-VMware provide the reference collateral (sizing, design, deployment, testing), to standardized this deployment approach to all customers.Many organizations don’t know the future demands that will be placed on IT, but IT is expected to be very responsive. So going a step further by forward (preprovisioned) FlexPod as a pool of infrastructure, the compute, network, and storage resources are on the floor already, and it is a very rapid process to meet the business needs.You can efficiently preprovision infrastructure only if it augments pools of shared infrastructure and satisfies a wide range of application requirements. FlexPod for VMware has been architected to meet a wide range of application demands from shared infrastructure pools that are centrally managed.
  • Goal of this slide: Our joint solution is tightly integrated across server, storage, and network layers so the entire infrastructure can be managed centrally.Key points: Each pool of server, storage, and network resources is a dynamic IT asset that can be managed independently to reduce risk and cost while boosting IT agility to response to business needs. These resources can be managed centrally with VMware vCenter Server and Cisco UCS Manager. Cisco’s UCS Manager and NetApp storage plug-ins integrate tightly with VMware vCenter Server. NetApp Virtual Storage console can be accessed directly via the vCenter console, enabling VMware administrators to manage key storage tasks such as provisioning, cloning, resizing, and backups independently. Changes to the network or SNA are exposed and relayed to vCenter, so the server administrator can work more efficiently and effectively. Our centralized management tools with simplified processes require fewer administrators for overall system management. Our Open Management Framework enables integration with management vendors such as BMC, CA, and others to enable orchestrated operations across the entire infrastructure stack. We will discuss our integration with third-party orchestration and ITSM solutions a little later in the presentation. The FlexPod has a unified architecture that helps enterprises manage the architecture centrally. The key components that help manage the FlexPod centrally include the VMware vCenter, the Cisco UCS Manager, OnCommand plug-ins for VMware and Microsoft.FlexPod comes with OnCommand unified manager so you can manage storage as one or more pools, using policy-based automation for provisioning and data protection. In addition, the FlexPod and OnCommand’s open APIs and SDK offer integration with various third-party orchestration management tools or home-grown tools, so you can continue to leverage your existing investments.FlexPod also includes OnCommand Insight Balance which monitors FlexPod performance. Use Insight Balance performance analytics to predict and identify performance capacity and performance headroom for a wide range of applications, in both your physical and virtual environments.As you scale your FlexPod, look to add on OnCommand Insight Plan as part of your architecture. Insight Plan has a data warehouse with a hierarchical structure to handle multi-site environments and multi-tenant data for Cloud. Insight Plan also provides you with roll up/drill down, enterprise reporting, including Standard and customizable reporting; business-level reporting across VM and storage domains and across multiple FlexPods Multi-tenancy reporting across business entities (such as FlexPod, tenant, LOB, BU, project, application, and data center) for cost awareness/accountability and showback.Insight Plan enables you to do chargeback and report on storage costs by tenant, business unit, tier, application, and so on.
