  • I agree with Chris's comments. It seems technology is just being developed with no overarching structure or purpose in mind. But as a simple human being (not a Techie per se), I don't want everything connected. and to Joost's comment about the government must control..that scares the crap out of me. I DON'T WANT the government in my life to that extent - I don't trust it to have my or my family's good at the heart of any of its decisions much less future decisions it can make based on newer technologies. We are rapidly becoming slaves to all of these innovations if not already.

  • @cwilson_ottawa: Chris - Thanks so much for the reference to Dr. Appleberry's speech - printed here in its entirety (http://www.emich.edu/univcomm/releases_archived/appleberry.html). As it turns out, he was referring to statements by others (in Washington, D.C.) when he used that '73 days' number - and he even distanced himself by saying the following:

'Several years ago, it was said that information available to mankind doubled every five years, and that by the year 2000 - this year, 97% of the information available to mankind would have been invented or discovered during the lifetime of those living today. About five years ago, one of our leaders in Washington said that by the year 2020, information available to mankind would double every 73 days. President Clinton, in his State of the Union speech two years ago, referred to a similar increase in the speed at which information availability was increasing. Whether any of these projections are accurate, our own experience validates that there is much, much more information available and more easily accessible than ever before - not just in the United States, but in every developed nation of the world!

So, whether or not we are to believe the doubling of information (the term used - not 'knowledge') when that statement comes from government sources in Washington, D.C. (who consistently fail to get numbers right), my earlier point remains as to what should be considered 'knowledge' and what a difference there is between 'knowledge' and content (as they referred to it using the word 'information'). It cannot be questioned that the world is 'smarter' or more knowledgeable as a result of having more information, but if our 'smarts' had doubled every 73 days, one would think we would have by now found a method to stop pirates who have been around for quite some time - yet we read again today that pirates have just captured two of our citizens from a ship off the coast of Nigeria.

  • #IoE Glasses Quantified Self Smart fabrics Pills How we connect will change radically…
  • Buildings will talk to smart meters that will talk to the grid to manage energy
  • Street lighting will turn into intelligent information kiosks, and offer new services such as communication, safety, entertainment
  • IP connectivity will be standard in all new vehicles ~500 Million connected cars by 2023
  • 2013 10 billion 2023
  • Stop lights Cars Lighting Buildings % 1.5 trillion things remain unconnected.
  • Connections make dumb things intelligent things.
