  • Question:: How can we upgrade housing in village Alaska.
  • Bob----asked to design a house! NEED: to solve for frozen pipes, bucket spills, and clean water that folks don’t have to haul it. It has to be “western” - but not substandard HUD homes. But still have running water
  • Not this kind of house! An integrated house! A house for the village. With running water. And systems integrating.
  • Collect it and store it.
  • PLANTS!
  • Bacteria!!! Yes.
  • Feed it to the plants! YES!

    • 4. He saw a problem…..how to build homes with runningwater and good toilets in arcticvillages. Let’s collect some rain water!
    • 5. Bob, the builder,built amodel homefor hisfamilywithouta well ora septic in Eagle River in 1985
    • 6. He designed a flat roof to collect rainand snow melt! 2010
    • 7. Oops---the water had too much nitrogen!With what would he fix it?
    • 8. HE FILTERED IT THROUGH PLANTS!
    • 9. OOPS! People get dirty! With what would he clean them? WITH A SHOWER!
    • 10. OOPS! There’s too much soap and toenails in the water! With what would he clean it?
    • 11. With Bacteria!
    • 12. OOPS!There was too many clumps ofbacteria in the water! With what would he fix THAT?
    • 13. He knew the fish would eat the bacteria!
    • 14. OOPS!There was fish pee in the water! GROSS! With what would he fix it?
