  • 1. PROJECT DESCRIPTION
  • 2. The Project: Exploring Technology 2011Every year around this time, the Digital Media students at Hyper Island gear up for the ExploringTechnology module.Exploring Technology introduces the students to digital technology and the principles of digitaldevelopment. The module is playful and has a strong focus on exploration and creativity within ateam environment. The overall aim is to explore technology in a tangible way, with tasks based around sensors, microcontrollers and coding. For the module, the class was divided into eight groups and asked to devise a project under the theme‘Word Hard, Play Hard,’ while simultaneously pushed to ‘explore technology’ in uncharted directions. On October 27th, we hold an exhibition in central Stockholm where each group exhibits their finalizedproject. Guests are encouraged to meander through and interact with each of the projects.During the module the class is divided into groups and within the overall theme ‘Word Hard, PlayHard’ each group has to make a project ‘exploring technology’.The module ends with a huge exhibition in central Stockholm on the 27th of October where eachgroup will display their projects and have the guests interact with it.
  • 3. The Product: InsenseUnder the name ‘Insense’ (stressing INdoors and SENSE), our fundamental goal was to connectpeople to their indoor environment in a different and beneficial way. While some environmental conditions of the home are easily sensed, like temperature, light and soundlevels, others are not so apparent: the amount of oxygen, carbon dioxide, humidity and impurities. All of these factors contribute to the health and well being of the home dweller. If left unchecked, theconsequences can be harmful. Our project aims to visualize the measurable changes and levels of interior environments. Usinghardware to measure the aforementioned conditions, and software to process it, our project displaysthis information, such that it can be visually rendered into something aesthetic and useful. This outputis shown on an interactive lamp, a screen, and websiteWe show this on an interactive lamp, a screen, and websiteDuring the module the class is divided into groups and within the overall theme ‘Word Hard, PlayHard’ each group has to make a project ‘exploring technology’.The module ends with a huge exhibition in central Stockholm on the 27th of October where eachgroup will display their projects and have the guests interact with it.
  • 4. The Team: ‘The Locals’We are seven enthusiastic Digital Media Students working on the project. We all have differentbackgrounds both in terms of nationalities and experience.During our idea generation process we quickly found that we all had a common interest in doinga project that had something to do with environmental changes. ‘Insense’ is a concept we havedeveloped together and something we all feel strongly for. Measuring and visualizing data that is aconstant in our daily lives is a project we both believe in and have fun doing. This is The Locals: Pernille Ravn Julien Donck pernille.ravn@hyperisland.se julien.donck@hyperisland.se Kei Chun Markus Dahlbom gye-sung.chun@hyperisland.se markus.dahlbom@hyperisland.se Rebekka Quiroz Wiberg Philippe Sainz rebekka.quiroz-wiberg@hyperisland.se philippe.sainz@hyperisland.se Peter Christian peter.christian@hyperisland.se @thehyperlocals thehyperlocals.wordpress.com
