Jesus and the Gospels
 Even though each of the Gospels reveal the truth
about was Jesus said (teaching) and did
(miracles, etc.), they cannot be relied upon as
accurate historical accounts.
 Remember the importance of literal vs. contextual
reading…
 The writers of the Gospels were not actually eye-
witnesses to Jesus’ life and did not know him
personally
 The writers were disciples of the Disciples of Jesus; each
wrote for a specific community of believers
A Bit More on
the Gospels…
 The Gospels of
Matthew, Mark,
Luke and John are
known as the
Synoptic Gospels
because they report
similar events in a
similar fashion; the
patterns in the
Gospels are similar
Five Historical Facts About Jesus That
Will NEVER Change:
1. Jesus was a real person who actually lived in
history. No one disputes this fact.
2. We have reliable eye-witness testimony to
Jesus’ life in the New Testament documents.
3. There can be no doubt that Jesus claimed to be
God.
4. Jesus proclaimed that he was the only way to
God.
5. Jesus proved WHAT and WHO he was by rising
from the dead.
Along came a movie that shook the
world to its core…
 The Da Vinci Code was released in 2006,
based on the best-selling novel by Dan
Brown, written in 2004.
What the Film Asserts…
“What I mean,” Teabing countered, “is that
everything our fathers taught us about Christ is
false. As are the stories about the Holy Grail.”
(Dan Brown, The Da Vinci Code)
What the film Asserts…
 The gospels are not historically accurate. The Roman
Catholic Church instigated a cover-up of some 80
gospel accounts that shed new light on the identity of
Jesus.
 Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene and she and
their bloodline are the Holy Grail.
 The truth about this has been hidden but kept alive by
a secret society called the “Priory of Sion”, which was
lead by people like Da Vinci.
 The early church did not believe that Jesus was divine.
Instead, they “voted” for His divinity and the bible at the
council of Nicaea in the fourth century.
The Consequences of this Film:
 People are confused about who Jesus
really is – historically and biblically
 The divinity of Christ has come into
question
 Suspicion about certain decisions made by
the Church throughout history  a
conspiracy theory
By the time you are finished
watching The Da Vinci Code:
 You will be able to appreciate (or not) as a
mere work of FICTION that contains
numerous religious lies.
 You will be able to address and CORRECT
all of the misinformation.
 This will be the focus of your assignment for this
unit…
