After a short experience in an accounting firmmanaging more than two hundred clients, in 2012 he proceeded to the takeover of the familybusiness, the Mechatronic Automation S.r.l., a company that develops technology for corrugatedcardboard industry, with clients like Smurfit Kappa Group and International Paper.Chiara Scotti – Marketing ManagerBorn in 1984, graduated in public relations and advertising at IULM University, Milan. After thedegree has immediately began to collaborate with the family business without leave out toexperience the world of work outside. A little bit of science…ProtecTIO2n is the MITA version of Titanium Dioxide, a material with photocatalyticproperties, composed of nano-particles with length less than 250nm.The photocatalytic properties of titanium dioxide were discovered by Akira Fujishima in1967 and published in 1972. The process on the surface of the titanium dioxide wascalled the Honda-Fujishima effect.Generally speaking, photocatalysis is a reaction which uses light to activate a substancewhich modifies the rate of a chemical reaction without being involved itself. And thephotocatalyst is the substance which can modify the rate of chemical reaction usinglight irradiation.Chlorophyll of plants is a typical natural photocatalyst.

Photocatalyst creates strong oxidation agentand electronic holes to breakdown theorganic matter to carbon dioxide and water inthe presence of photocatalyst, light and water.When photocatalyst titanium dioxide (TiO2)absorbs Ultraviolet radiation from sunlight orilluminated light source (fluorescent lamps), itwill produce pairs of electrons and holes.The electron of the valence band of titaniumdioxide becomes excited when illuminated bylight. The excess energy of this excitedelectron promoted the electron to theconduction band of titanium dioxide therefore creating the negative-electron (e-) and positive-hole (h+) pair. This stage is referred as the semiconductors photo-excitation state. The energydifference between the valence band and the conduction band is known as the Band Gap.Wavelength of the light necessary for photo-excitation is:1240 (Plancks constant, h) / 3.2 ev (band gap energy) = 388 nm
  6. 6. The positive-hole of titaniumdioxide breaks apart the watermolecule to form hydrogen gas andhydroxyl radical. The negative-electron reacts with oxygenmolecule to form super oxide anion.This cycle continues until light isavailable.
  7. 7. Basic functions of:Sterilizing EffectPhotocatalyst does not only kill bacteria cells, but also decompose the cell itself. The titaniumdioxide photocatalyst has been found to be more effective than any other antibacterial agent,because the photocatalytic reaction works even when there are cells covering the surface andwhile the bacteria are actively propagating. The end toxin produced at the death of cell is alsoexpected to be decomposed by photocatalytic action. Titanium dioxide does not deteriorate andit shows a long-term anti-bacterial effect. Generally speaking, disinfections by titanium oxide isthree times stronger than chlorine, and 1.5 times stronger than ozone.Air Purifying EffectThe photocatalytic reactivity of titanium oxides can be applied for the reduction or elimination ofpolluted compounds in air such as NOx, cigarette smoke, as well as volatile compounds arisingfrom various construction materials. Also, high photocatalytic reactivity can be applied to protectlamp-houses and walls in tunneling, as well as to prevent white tents from becoming sooty anddark.
  8. 8. Deodorizing EffectOn the deodorizing application, the hydroxyl radicals accelerate the breakdown of any VolatileOrganic Compounds or VOCs by destroying the molecular bonds. This will help combine theorganic gases to form a single molecule that is not harmful to humans thus enhance the aircleaning efficiency. Some of the examples of odor molecules are: Tobacco odor, nitrogen dioxide,urine and fecal odor, gasoline, and many other hydro carbon molecules in the atmosphere.Anti-fogging, Self-CleaningMost of the exterior walls of buildings become soiled from automotive exhaust fumes, whichcontain oily components. When the original building materials are coated with a photocatalyst, aprotective film of titanium provides the self-cleaning building by becoming antistatic, superoxidative, and hydrophilic. The hydrocarbon from automotive exhaust is oxidized and the dirt onthe walls washes away with rainfall, keeping the building exterior clean at all times.Water PurificationPhotocatalyst coupled with UV lights can oxidize organic pollutants into nontoxic materials, suchas CO2 and water and can disinfect certain bacteria. This technology is very effective at removingfurther hazardous organic compounds (TOCs) and at killing a variety of bacteria and some virusesin the secondary wastewater treatment.

Titanium Dioxide is a product known since 1972 and many companies today, from USA to China,are on the market with their products and applications, but there are two fundamental reasonswhy these companies haven’t boomed yet:-1) Effectiveness and durability of the TiO2 treatment-2) CostBoth of these are due to the same problem:Titanium Dioxide perform the reaction not only versus external agents, but on the treatedsurface too.As MITA, before discovering the right path, we tested several version of titanium dioxide that canbe find on the market.For the majority of them the effect was weak and of short life, if the Tio2 was used as stand-alone product.The others needed, in order to isolate the effect, an organic primer, that rise the cost of theentire treatment of up 10 times the alone TiO2!!

  12. 12. TiO2 offers great potential as an industrial technology for detoxification or remediation ofwastewater due to several factors:1. The process uses natural oxygen and sunlight and thus occurs under ambient conditions; it iswavelength selective and is accelerated by UV light.2. The photocatalyst is inexpensive, readily available, non-toxic, chemically and mechanicallystable, and has a high turnover.3. The formation of photocyclized intermediate products, unlike direct photolysis techniques,is avoided.4. Oxidation of the substrates to CO2 is complete.5. TiO2 can be supported on suitable reactor substrates.Our ProtecTiO2 has been developed in a liquid form, allowing us to apply it “at cold” on any kindof surfaces like cement, ceramic and even draperies, avoiding problem that some of howcompetitors faces with their solutions, that need to be applied at high temperatures,encountering problems with sensible materials.

StrategiesWith the TiO2 we aim to establish strategic partnership in the sector where the photo catalysiscan make the difference, both in term of technology and added value.A list of possible application of the protecTiO2 can be, as seen before:- Applied on concrete, both as pure treatment and as photocatalytic painto The building treated will clean the air from pollution and will be self-cleaning, justwashing itself with the rain.- Applied on aluminum panels, like the ones used to cover skyscrapers and roofs.- As anti-bacteria treatment for clothes:o Hospital supplies.- Treatment for the ceramic:o Self-cleaning and sterilizing bathroom furniture, tiles- Any other application where the photocatalytic effect can be useful.

Commercial Strategy- We would like to create a network of communication with architects and designers whichgives information on the specificity of the product.- Have a point of reference with showroom to demonstrate features and the validity of ourproduct.- Design gadget ad hoc and with strong environmental impact to make the name known.- Being present on social networks to communicate with any partners or customersworldwide.- Create a network of agents trained by us both in Italy and abroad.

NeedsMITA is a new concept that can be applied to several industries and field.The number of possible applications and benefits for the humans are countless.As we aim from the very beginning to give to the business an international footprint and a strongframework we need:-Funds: the total amount for the first 5 years should be considered between 3 and 4 million Euro.-Partnerships: we have the technology, now it need to join to a real and marketable products.-Team: companies are made by people, and we need and intelligent, prepared and enthusiastteam that can help the business to grow in the right direction.
