Communist Russia: Provisional GovernmentTerrible Conditions: Inflation and hunger got worse because the war didn’t end. (ie the people stayed angry.) The Provisional Government didn’t manage to end the food shortages or inflation. This made people lost faith in the government. Hence many people started supporting other parties like the Bolshevik PartyWar:The Provisional Government tried to continue the war. Resources that could improve the lives of the Russia people were used up.It caused more suffering as there was food and fuel shortages, people became more dissatisfied at the Provisional Government.October Revolution:Kornilov tried to overthrow the Provisional Government in 1917. The Provisional Government was powerless, had no choice and had to ask the Bolsheviks to help it. This made the government seem weak AND made the Bolsheviks popular. People lost faith in the Provisional Government.Nazi Germany: Weimar GovernmentOpposition of the TOV:Top military leaders felt “stabbed in the back” by the Weimar Politicians as the army could have fought on but were betrayed by the politicians who signed the TOV. It was seen as harsh and humiliating and was a bitter blow to German pride. This made the Weimar Government very unpopular and weakened the Weimar Republic.Attempts to overthrow the government:Many Germans rejected the idea of a democratic government, thus they worked to over throw the Weimar Republic. There were repeated attempts to seize power and overthrow the government such as the Kapp Putsch and Munich Putsch. It showed how weak the new democratic government was, thus people had less confidence in it. It also helped the Nazis to become popular.Failure of the GovernmentThe Weimar Government was based on proportional representation where many parties form a coalitional government. It was weak as the parties would disagree with each other often and thus fell as quickly as they are formed and keep changing.Could not solve economic problemsThe government printed more money to pay reparations to the Allied Powers. The occupation of the Ruhr also reduced the production of resources This caused Germany to suffer hyper-inflation and people became poor overnight. The government lost the support of the middle class as it was unable to solve the economic problems. (Great Depression)Fascist Japan: Democratic GovernmentThe Diet’s Limited Power:Real power was in the hands of the Emperor and the ministers. The Diet did not have the power to make decisions and make its own decisions. As the Diet could not make decisions that would benefit the Japanese, they Japanese thus lose faith in them, causing the Diet to lose support.Corruption:There were close ties between the democratic leaders and the zaibatsus. The owners of the zaibatsus would make use of the close ties with the government to pass laws which will benefit them. This caused different political parties to accuse them of being corrupt, and fistfights broke out, as a result, the Diet was unable to gain the support of the Japanese.Failure to solve economic problemsNearly half of the farmers had a very small piece of land, thus cannot make profit, whereas the other half of the farms belonged to landlords who rent their lands at high prices. This caused rice prices to fall, and make life even difficult for rice farmers. As the government could not help to solve the problem, it lost support from the Japanese.Workers in Japan lived in crowded, unhygienic rooms where they have to work for long hours. As the workers felt that the government didn’t care about them, they joined unions.25000 workers also went on strike in Tokyo in 1921.Trade ImbalanceJapan began to prosper due to global trade. Some exports like textiles, china and porcelain where Japan’s leading exports. However, Japan needs more raw materials for its major industries and thus need to import more than export. This imbalance increased when Japan had to import more food for the population, thus people had to pay more money, leading to unhappiness with the Government.Great DepressionIt lead to a decrease in Japanese Goods due to protectionism. This caused silk, Japan’s main export, to be affected as demand fell Price fell Less people required to work in factories Unemployment, Businesses collapsed Economic depression. As the government could not help to improve the economy, people lost faith in the government.
