Combined HumanitiesEssential Skills for SBQ and SEQReliability, Comparison, SEQ Factor/Judgment Skills
      • InferenceAlways give 2 inferences where possible, and don’t forget to answer the question!Source – Based Question (Comparison)How similar/different Do both similarities and differences.Must state whether sources are similar or different in 1st sentence.State the common criterion (Match) (Common trend between both sources)E.g. both sources are similar, match common criterion, evidence, explanation.Factor Question4 Paragraphs: Given Factor, 2 other factors and conclusion.Identify issue / QuestionIdentify given factorParagraph 1: Describe and explain (how it is linked to the issue) given factor. Linking words: Therefore, as a result, thus. L3 (4 – 6)Paragraphs 2 – 3: Describe and explain other factors. L5 (8 – 10)Paragraph 4: Conclusion. Weigh the factors. Information cannot be repeated, new criteria required. L6 (11 – 12)Judgment Question3 Paragraphs.1st Paragraph: Agree with Question.2nd Paragraph: Disagree with Question3rd Paragraph: Conclusion. This types of questions does not have much to write, no more than 1 page.Special types of judgment question (with 3 factors given) are answered differently. You must describe and explain each factor in 3 paragraphs, then last paragraph give a conclusion (weigh the factors). DO NOT ANSWER THE QNS IN THE 1ST PARAGRAPH!Note: Judgment Questions usually contains words like successful, failure, right and wrong, and must give a stand on the issue.Remember to distinguish a factor and judgment question! A judgment question requires you to agree and disagree.Writing the AnswerState which source supports given source: Source C is reliable because it is supported by Source D.State what both sources says (Evidence). Source C says “…”. Source D also says “…”. Remember that issue is the thing being proved and the evidence must match.Explain why the source supports the given source.State which source does not support given source. Source C is unreliable as Source E challenges or contradicts it.State what both sources says (Evidence). Source C says “…” whereas Source D says “…”. Remember that issue is the thing being proved and the evidence must match.Explain why the source does not support the given source.Look out for differences in the purpose or tone. Remember to state evidence and explain why the source support or not in terms of tone.Reminders1 Source is enough to support the given source. Always put 1 source in 1 paragraph.Remember to answer the question in the first sentence.Always answer the question!Always look out for…Provenance (author) E.g. If a Tamil supports the Sinhalese, it is reliable as Tamils are supposed to oppose the Sinhalese.Content (Prejudice – make conclusion based on limited information, Discrimination – prejudice in action, Bias – one-sided, Propaganda – influence people to support the cause)Cross-Referencing. (Cross Reference to something with sources and contextual knowledge). Might have to do both for and against.Purpose and Tone. If a source has a purpose or a tone, it is not reliable.Types of Reliability Questions:Does this source prove…Can you trust or believe what this source says about…
