  10. 10. 10You’ll find many of the larger employers apply a four-step recruitmentprocess for their Graduate Programs.Step 1: The initial online applicationOnce you have found a position you want to apply for, you will needto fill in an online application. Generally, this application will requireyou to:a) Provide your academic resultsb) Outline your employment history and/or relevant work experiencec) Address key selection criteria such as:−− Demonstrate the skills and competencies expected in the role−− Why you have chosen to apply for the role.d) Plus, you may need to complete:−− Behavioural-based questions, which aim to assess your skillsin areas such as communication and time management−− Psychometric testing, which some companies use to assessyour personality, along with your literacy and numeracy skills.Step 2: Phone conversation with a recruiterIf your online application is successful, the company’s recruiteror human resources officer will generally call you to discuss yourapplication and the position in more detail. This is a great opportunityto ask questions and learn more about the role.Step 3: Face-to-face assessmentYou’ll then move onto a face-to-face element, such as a group activity. Here, you are often assessed on your:• Problem-solving skills• Teamwork abilities• Leadership potential• Communication and initiative traits. This process may also have a technical component, such as abusiness-based case study, or be as simple as attending a cocktailparty so your prospective employer can assess how well you interactwith staff.Step 4: The face-to-face interviewThis interview process could involve you being interviewedby a panel of two or more people, including a senior manageror partner from the organisation.Whatever you do, always come prepared and be confident.Be ready to:• Talk about your skills and past experiences• Promote your strengths and attributes• Highlight what you know about the company• Reinforce why you want to work with them• Ask questions about the type of work you would be required to do.From here, the company will determine if you are suitable for the role.If you are successful, they will check your references and send youa formal letter of offer.See more tips on finding a jobwww.charteredaccountants.com.au/Students/Finding-a-job/Getting-an-interview.aspxHow employers recruit
  11. 11. 11It’s easy to be overlooked amid the flood of CVs employers receive. Here are some strategies to consider that could help you gain apotential employer’s attention.Cultivate your digital brandIt’s important to maintain your brand both offline and online. What you share on your Facebook page, in a YouTube video, or ona blog all matter to potential employers. In fact, it’s likely a hiringmanager will at least Google you before an interview. So you needto ensure that what is viewable to the public won’t reflect poorly onyou as a professional.Set up your LinkedIn profileA great way to build your online identity is by setting up yourprofessional profile on LinkedIn. Essentially it’s your online CV,and helps you to network with others.Joining our free student club, OneNetwork, will give you theopportunity to access our LinkedIn group and Facebook page. Here, you’ll be able to connect with potential employers, joinin on conversations and profile your professional experience.Tailor your job applicationsTailor your CV and cover letter for every application. It’s well worth itbecause the hiring manager can see at a glance your credentials andwhy you should be considered for an interview.Plus, adapting your CV for each job opportunity shows you’re takinga thoughtful approach to your job search. Instead of hitting sendand deploying the same information time and again, you’re making theeffort to explain why you’re the best candidate for each specific role.Follow up: before and after the interviewAfter you send out a CV, don’t play the waiting game if you want toget noticed. Sending an email or calling to confirm your CV has beenreceived can help earn you a spot on a busy hiring manager’s radar. After an interview, it also makes a good impression to send a thankyou email. Doing this re-emphasises your enthusiasm for the positionand your strengths. How to stand out from the crowd
  12. 12. 12One of only a handful of indigenous Chartered Accountants in thenation, Ellery has worked in Queensland for the past five years aftergraduating from James Cook University with a Bachelorof Commerce.Aged 26, Ellery is already building an impressive client base in theTownsville region, where he is the only indigenous employee amongabout 200 employees in the local accounting firm, WHK.Blackman, who grew up in Mt Isa, says working in a smaller regionalfirm has allowed him to avoid the big city rat race and develop a morepersonal relationship with a wide range of clients.I see my clients around town and enjoy talking with them ona personal level. I wouldn’t be able to do that if I had only largecorporate clients.Blackman, who is treasurer of the newly-formed Townsville RegionalIndigenous Business Network, says indigenous businesses are growingacross Australia and it makes sense for indigenous accountants to playa vital role in business, industry and indigenous communities. His clients include registered Native Title body corporates and spanthe cultural heritage, retail, medical and hospitality industries.Working in a regional office means Chartered Accountants are exposedto much more one-on-one client contact than if they worked in a biggercity office. You just don’t get the same opportunities in a bigger office as you dowhen you work in a smaller regional office. Those opportunities onlyarise much later in your career when you work in a big-city firm.Meet Ellery Blackman CADiscover Ellerys rewarding career in Regional QueenslandAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studentsThe Joint Accounting Bodies are working togetherto support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderspursue a business or accounting career. For more information contact Gavin Tye, RelationshipManager Indigenous strategies (07) 3233 6500 orcareers.qld@charteredaccountants.com.au
  13. 13. 13Since Chartered Accountant, Simone Taylor, joined the OrotonGroup in2009 she has been helping steer the company’s finance function. As the financial controller, the diversity of her role is phenomenal. From early morning sales meetings, product reports and cashflow,to rolling out a new Asia strategy and setting up new payroll and auditstructures, Simone enjoys a truly interesting career.I’m working on new projects all the time, that’s what I like about the role.Plus it’s about company announcements and looking into listing rules, familiarising myself with reporting rules in Singapore, Hong Kong andMalaysia, and looking at what we are doing over the next five years. With 85-odd stores across Australia and Asia, OrotonGroup has longbeen a shining light on the retail front. But a changing landscape and thegrowth in online shopping, has called on Simone to help develop possiblestrategies that will ensure continuing success and future growth.Simone says part of her role includes exploring strategic options such asacquisitions, partnerships, licence agreements and capital management.Meanwhile, she has also played a key role in the company’s expansioninto Asia, and has enjoyed the support of her boss and CFO ofOrotonGroup, Kevin Fine CA. She believes Fine’s guidance, coupledwith a strong company culture, drives her personal contribution to theOrotonGroup’s performance.Looking ahead, Taylor foresees an eventual move into a CFO role thatrepresents the right mix of company culture and product mix. As withOroton, she sees any future role as continuing to add to the business.I can’t be at a company where it’s just presenting a report at the end ofthe month – it has to be a business partner role.Want to know more?
