1. 1. PowerPoint Presentation By Diviya Padman Charlotte cooper Alice Arthur Joanna Holt
 2. 2. What is the difference between a vector based image and a bitmap (or raster) based image?

Bitmap (or raster) graphics are stored as a series of tiny dots called pixels. Each pixel is assigned a color, and when they are viewed together, they form a picture.

Vector graphics are not based on pixel patterns, but instead use mathematical formulas consisting of lines and curves that make shapes.

Advantages of vector image formats are that they are resolution independent and form smooth curves.

Advantages of Raster: Photos usually look more accurate. The gradients are smoother and it maintains the subtle details within the photograph.

 3. 3. Examples of a vector based image and a bitmap

Raster based image at 100%

Vector based image at 100%

 4. 4. What is the difference between a GIF formatted file and a JPEG?

GIF files are very good for saving line diagrams. GIF files have the added advantage that they can save animations. They use a different method to compress data and so do not suffer from blurring.

A JPEG file is solid. These files are generally used as a background type of image. They are good for complex images like photographs; GIF files are very good for saving line diagrams. GIF files have the added advantage that they can save animations. Disadvantage of JPG files is that for simple figures, there is a loss of definition around boundaries; text and clean lines become blurred.

 5. 5. What is a ‘colour palette’?

A colour palette refers to the colours included in an image. A small palette has few colours (as shown in image 1), whereas an image with a large palette has many more colours (image 2).

Image 1 Image 2
 6. 6. What is the difference between an embedded graphic (image) and a linked graphic (image) in a Word or PowerPoint document?

A linked graphic is stored in the source file so that only a representation is shown in the document. If the source file undergoes modification, the information in the document is also updated.

An embedded graphic becomes a part of the document and no longer belongs to the source file so that it does not change when the source file is altered. This is the default setting. This can be seen when a paint file is inserted into Word, then the original paint file is changed and saved once more. The image in the document does not reflect the changes made.

 7. 7. What is lossless compression? Do JPEG format files normally use this? Why is it important?

a class of data compression algorithms that allows the exact original data to be reconstructed from the compressed data.

No, JPEG use "lossy," meaning that the decompressed image isn't quite the same as the one you started with.

Lossless compression is used when it is important that the original and the decompressed data be identical .

 8. 8. What does the FBS skills wiki say about using PNG files? Are there other new file formats to keep an eye on?

PNG" or " P ortable N etwork G raphics" file, overcomes many of the problems with GIF and JPG files but it does not support animations.

GIF or " G raphics I nterchange F ormat“ use a different method to compress data and so do not suffer from blurring. However, GIF files use only 256 colours and so a high‑resolution image saved as a GIF file may suffer from alterations in hue and some loss of definition.

 9. 9. What is Flickr? Why might someone use this resource? Does it have an academic use or is it purely recreational?

Flickr is a photo sharing website and web services suite, and an online community platform. In addition to being a popular Web site for users to share personal photographs, the service is widely used by bloggers as a photo repository. Its popularity has been fueled by its innovative online community tools that allow photos to be tagged and browsed by folksonomic means (collaborative tagging , social classification, social indexing, social tagging).

 10. 10. What is BAD about using .bmp format files in your work? Why should you try to avoid this?

The BMP file format, sometimes called bitmap or DIB file format (for device-independent bitmap), is an image file format used to store bitmap digital images, especially on Microsoft Windows and OS/2 operating systems. Bitmap images are not supported by any Web browsers or Web coding languages. Therefore, they are not suitable for use as images in a Web application. Bitmap images are best used for their intended purpose, as a system support on a PC Windows-based computer. They should not be used for the placement of a bitmap image when designing for a high-end print production job.
