  2. 2. Synergy <ul><li>The relationship between different media products in which one is used to improve the exposure of another. </li></ul><ul><li>E.g. the soundtrack from a film that is released on CD, further advertising the film while making money as a product in its own right </li></ul>
  3. 3. Convergence <ul><li>The interlocking of IT and telecommunications companies, and content providers from the publishing worlds of newspapers, magazines, music, radio, television, films, and entertainment software. </li></ul><ul><li>Media convergence brings </li></ul><ul><li>together the “three Cs”— </li></ul><ul><li>computing, communications, </li></ul><ul><li>and content. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Horizontal integration <ul><li>When a company expands its business into different products that are similar to current lines. </li></ul><ul><li>e.g. A hot dog vendor expanding into selling hamburgers. </li></ul>

Vertical integration <ul><li>A business expanding ‘upwards’ so it covers all areas of production – acquiring raw materials, producing, distributing and marketing and retailing the product </li></ul><ul><li>e.g. the oil industry, in which a single firm commonly owns the oil wells, refines the oil, and sells it in petrol stations. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Social networking <ul><li>An online service that builds or supports relationships between people. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Streaming <ul><li>Data streaming is when a multimedia file can be played back without being completely downloaded first. Most files, like shareware and software updates that you download off the Internet, are not streaming </li></ul>
  8. 8. Gaikai <ul><li>A streaming, cloud-based gaming </li></ul><ul><li>technology that allows gamers to </li></ul><ul><li>play, preview, and demo PC and </li></ul><ul><li>console video games for free. </li></ul><ul><li>Uses previously installed plug-ins such as Java, Flash or Silverlight. </li></ul><ul><li>Embeds demos in games related sites, so users do not have to seek out content or register for it.   </li></ul><ul><li>At the end of the demo, the customer will be given the option to purchase the game or product from a local retailer, online store, direct-to-drive download, or continue streaming the product. If users wish to continue streaming after the free trial, the company will allow them to continue on a pay-as-you-go basis. </li></ul><ul><li>Also – OnLive and OTOY </li></ul>

Online consumer behaviour is different: <ul><li>fewer payment options online </li></ul><ul><li>harder to ‘return’ a service than a physical product </li></ul><ul><li>lots of free content online – different expectations – hard to get users to pay at all </li></ul><ul><li>free services needed to build initial audience (an empty virtual world is boring) </li></ul><ul><li>‘ Freemium’ – free games, supplemented by premium priced extra services </li></ul>
