    Seoul Design Olympiad 2008 - Presentation Transcript

    1. A Brief Introduction to an International Design Event Presentation By: Raymond Chetti Note: All Pictures are Linked to the Official Seoul Design Olympiad Website
    2. What is Seoul Design Olympiad?
      • A 21 day international festival organized with the aims of IMPROVING the QUALITY of people’s LIVES through DESIGN .
      • SDO invites professionals from all over the world to discuss the important issue of improving people’s lives through DESIGN.
    3. Design is AIR
      • Design is like air. It’s an energy that breathes life, it’s always with us and is multi-sensory.
      • Design, like air, is necessary for our survival.
      • The SDO 2008 will discuss and explore the design of life in terms of urban design, architectural design, and urban planning design .
    4. Festival Structure
      • The 21 day Olympiad is comprised of three parts.
    5. Festival Schedule
      • During the three days (10/9-10/12) that my colleague and I will be at SDO ‘08, we will be able to experience all aspects of the Seoul Design Olympiad.
    6. Seoul Design Conference
      • Goal : Discuss the role of design in future urban life for designers, educators, city planners, and diverse experts in design industries.
      Dates: 10/9-10-12
    7. Seoul Design Conference I
      • The first day focuses on the concept of City Design.
      • Keynote speakers are Hadid and Schumacher, winners of the Dongdaemun Design Plaza & Park project.
    8. Seoul Design Conference II
      • The second day involves the concept of Design Leadership and Design Education.
      • Keynote speakers include Libeskind and Lovegrove. Libeskind is an American who was appointed “Cultural Ambassador for Architecture” by the U.S. Secretary of State and Lovegrove is one of the most published designers in the last decade.
    9. Seoul Design Conference III
      • The last day revolves around the topic of Sustainable and Social Design.
      • Keynote speakers include Behar and Moore. Behar has been known for developing projects that are in tune with sustainable development while being connected to human emotions. Moore has been praised by various media for her designs, and is considered one of the most important women in America.
    10. Seoul Design Exhibition I
      • During the course of the 21 day festival, various exhibitions will be open where the public can experience the competitiveness and complex system of the city.
      • Exhibitions will revolve around sustainable environment, urban planning initiatives , and other elements of the design field.
    11. Seoul Design Exhibition II
      • The primary exhibition revolves around Zaha Hadid / Patrick Schumacher of Zaha Hadid Architects
      • They are responsible for the design of the new Dongdaemun Design Park and Plaza project based in Seoul, Korea.
    12. Seoul Design Exhibition III
      • Other exhibitions include:
        • Design is Air
        • Seoul Design Now
        • Vision of Design Seoul
        • Many more…
    13. Seoul Design Competition I
      • As part of the olympiad’s exhibitions, the winners of the Seoul Design Competition will be displayed.
      • The main goal of the competition’s entrants are to “uncover environmentally-friendly and creative design solutions for a sustainable city life…”
    14. Conclusion
      • After attending the Seoul Design Olympiad for three days (10/9-10/12) we hope to accomplish the following:
        • Gain a wide range of knowledge about the field of Environmental Design from professionals all over the world.
        • Document our experiences as student correspondents thru modern, accessible media including:
          • Web-Blog / Photo-blog
          • Online Trip Journals
        • Present and share our knowledge and experiences to peers, associated faculty, and interested persons thru:
          • PowerPoint Presentations
