  3. 3. AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS:MEDIA USE BY CHILDRENYOUNGERTHAN 2YEARS• In 1999, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued apolicy statement addressing media use in children. The purposeof that statement was to educate parents about the effectsthat media—both the amount and the content—may have onchildren. In one part of that statement, the AAP recommendedthat “pediatricians should urge parents to avoid televisionviewing for children under the age of two years.”The wordingof the policy specifically discouraged media use in this agegroup, although it is frequently misquoted by media outlets asno media exposure in this age group.
