      • This is jurisdictional scan of the Department of Transportation (DOT) twitter pages throughout North America.
      • This scan will also include an overview of 511 and which jurisdictions are participating.
      • This scan also indicates what other forms of social media the various jurisdictions may be using.
      • There will be a summary at the end of the presentation of the findings.

    • 511 – General Information
      • A 511 traffic information service is similar to other high profile single-access systems such as 311, 411, and 911. The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) allocated the telephone number “511” for the purposes of a traveler and weather information service, and this designation was secured through the work of the PPSC Task Force several years ago.
      • United States - Public and private sectors across the US have invested millions of dollars in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to enhance mobility, improve safety, and expedite the movement of freight to its destination. In 2000 the American Federal Communications Commission designated "511" as the single traffic information telephone number to be made available to states and local jurisdictions across the country. Today there are more than 30 state-wide 511 service operations and a number of localized services such as St. Louis, Boston, Cincinnati, and portions of Florida and California.

    • Findings
      • The sophistication varied.
        • Some states used multiple twitter accounts for different geographical regions or for specific highways.
        • Where subscription service existed, it did not allow for a lot of options.
          • Option for am or pm
          • Weekday or weekend
        • 511 pages varied in appearance but overall seemed similar to our own RoadInfo site.
          • Still need to dial or speak (where voice recognition existed) specific highway numbers to access highway information.
          • Some provided subscription capability.
        • It should be noted that tweets can be sent to SMS enabled phones as well.
    • Canada
      • There are 3 provinces and one territory using 511:
        • New Brunswick
        • Nova Scotia
        • Quebec
        • Yukon
      • I found 1 twitter page for Quebec.
      • I did find a twitter page for the Trans-Canada Highway.

      • Quebec is the only province that had twitter account for traffic conditions.
        • The page was very basic.
      • The 511 site looked better than the other Canadian jurisdictions.
